Last Sunday(14/9/2008), I read in the Times of India supplement that several people had started opting for unconventional careers. Though career counselling and coaching is sometimes used interchgeably on some websites, I read this disctinction on one site:-
Career counselors help their clients to get a job. Career counselors might repackage clients to appear more hirable for their job interviews. Career counselors do not help clients to become business owners or independent contractors. Career counselors are mostly loyal to whoever pays them, and rarely form a strong bond with their clients.
Career coaches assist their clients to discover their ideal income position or career. With their ideal career, clients will be able to "Go to Play" every day because they are doing what they love and excel at. Career coaches then assist their clients to get their ideal position or career, which may include becoming a business owner, an independent contractor, or an employee. Career coaches are totally loyal to their clients, and form a strong confidential bond
Another interesting definition on another site:-
Career management coaches..can identify missing skills or style difficulties and other pragmatic tips..."The Wall Street Journal"
In learning to ride a bike, a therapist may focus on your feelings about riding, your past experiences, and the bike itself, and a consultant may cover everything you may want to know about bikes (or about the consultant's bike).
A coach will help you choose a bike that you like, encourage you to sit on it...hold the seat as you peddle along...and then jog along side of you as you take off down the path you want to travel on, cheering! A coach works for you, helping you to become the best you can be!
Considering the definitions above, are there any career coaches in India? As it is, coaching in general seems to be in its infancy in India. In this vast forum of ours, is anyone aware of any Indian career coach(based in India)?
