Hi,

I would like to know the main difference between HRM and personnel management.

The difference between HRM and PM is not much to say, but there are main differences in the attitude of approach. When it was PM, it was personnel work management where the department would try to manage the work of the employees including their salaries, promotions, etc. So, at that time, PM was looked at as why this department is needed for the company only.

When HRM was introduced, a totally different attitude emerged. We could say that we moved from the lower rungs of Maslow's hierarchy to the top rungs. This means doing the job with dedication and making a difference. In Human Resource Management, we strive to get the best out of people, motivate them, and emphasize that the HRM department adds more value to the organization. In this context, the processes are concentrated on people, whereas at the top, it was more administration-oriented only. This shift is mainly due to the global change perspective and India's transition into globalization. This has led to the emergence of many new areas in the corporate world like talent management, knowledge management, CPO, etc.

Personnel management is the activity of managing personnel, usually employees.

Human Resource Management is a broader concept than Personnel Management; it is directly related to the development of HR, with managing HR being a part of it.
