Dear All,
This story from 2005 in TOI/ET reflects the penchant of the media for sensationalism, scandalizing, and creating new national villains each day. I have been working in NTPC-HR for the last 16 years and have yet to find such an anomaly. In fact, NTPC does not have any trades called sweeper, peon, etc. In the unit where I am currently working, we do not have any attendants for carrying files or drivers for vehicles. Everybody carries their own files. There is just one driver for the head of the business unit.
In this instance, it is more likely that the persons in question might have superannuated in that year. All the superannuation benefits/terminal benefits were paid/released to him. Thus, the amounts released have exceeded a certain threshold limit, and thus the case needed to be reported in the annual accounts.
NTPC is a socially responsible organization. It is delivering value for its clients and stakeholders at very competitive rates. Professionals of this forum need to exercise wisdom in accepting such stories.
