Moving to Canada with 2.5 Years in HR: How Can I Craft a Standout CV for Job Applications?

Dear seniors,

I am currently working with an IT company and planning to move to Canada. I have a total of 2.5 years of experience in the HR field and am seeking guidance on how I should prepare a compelling CV to apply for jobs there.

Let me brief you about my profile in the current company. We have three offices in India, and our main office is in Noida where I am placed. I am responsible for Recruitment, PF activities, attendance, full and final settlement of employees, policies (medical and life insurance provided to employees), leave record maintenance, personal records management, issuance of all types of letters, etc.

In short, I am not only responsible for the employees in Noida but also for all the other locations. I report to the Company Secretary as we do not have an HR Manager.

Since this is quite urgent, I would appreciate your guidance on the same or if you could provide me with a sample CV.

What's your basic qualification and professional degree, etc.? What relevance does that qualification have to HR? If you have an HR qualification, you need to apply for validation of your HR qualification from Canadian associations in the relevant profession. They will certify your qualification as equivalent to Certified HR, which is an essential requirement for HR appointments in Canada. Alternatively, you can complete HR certification in Canada.

You have to first apply for immigration through the Canadian Embassy in New Delhi. It's a long process with thorough background checks, and you have to pay fees, pass tests, and show 10,000 Canadian Dollars in addition to a validation address suggested by the applicant's address where they will charge fees.

For details, contact the Canadian Embassy. I was under the impression you are immigrating on a Spouse Visa. Generally, ladies migrate with their husbands, and no one migrates without cause. If you are an economic migrant, then your Indian qualifications will not be helpful because Canadian labor laws and specialist HR positions are different from those in India. Job portals are not helpful because they receive many such applications that are thrown into the garbage. You cannot be interviewed via telecon without a skills shortage list that the Canadian Agency declares for certain employments. HR is certainly not one among them.

Therefore, you have to migrate first and then search for an HR job after acquiring Canadian Certified HR professional status.

Yes, actually, my husband has recently moved to Canada and now it's my turn. He's there for 2 years, after which we will be back in India. Since the country's rules, customs, and culture will be new to me, I know it will be a difficult phase of my life to search for a job for myself. So, I actually wanted that when I reach there, I should have at least some source through which I can apply for a job. I find myself helpless and literally do not have any clue where to start from.

I think there is a consultancy by the name Husys Consulting, which some time back was hiring HR professionals for Canada at the entry level. They provide training on various HR aspects in Canada and arrange client interviews. The only thing, however, is that you would have to start from scratch as the HR profession is very different from India in terms of regulations and practices. I don't know if they have an office in Delhi, but they definitely have an office in India. I think their website is husysconsulting.com. There are a lot of articles published by them in Times Ascent. That might be one of the options you can try if they are still offering those kinds of jobs.

As per your email, you seem to be the de facto HR Head, and be proud of the same. Since you are the head of the initiative, highlight the following in your CV:

- You take ownership in nurturing and augmenting the Human Capital.
- You value people and are a one-stop shop for their requirements, starting from their entry and exit.
- You are process-savvy and respect SLAs.
- You have an excellent track record of meeting your SLAs about 95% of the time, i.e., to use the Six Sigma jargon, Mean plus or minus 2 Standard Deviations.
- You make the entrant to your company very comfortable and ensure a smooth transition, and likewise one's exit by conducting the exit formalities as per the organization's norms. You also ensure that the exited employee leaves the organization and feels nostalgic.

Well, these activities you carry out with aplomb.

I trust that if your CV is made as per the above, certainly it carries weight (Though, I do not know if it will be killing :-)
