Navigating Job Offers: How to Handle Background Checks and Salary Negotiations?

I have received job offers from Citi Technology Services and Godrej Infotech through a consultant. Citi is offering me 5.75 lakhs per annum, and Godrej is offering 4.5 lakhs per annum. CTS is located 5 minutes from my house, and Godrej is located 1 hour from my house. The joining date for Citi is 1st September, and for Godrej, it is 15th September.

My plan is to work for Citi till 14th September. If I don't feel comfortable in Citi, I will join Godrej Infotech. However, my consultant is pressuring me to choose one of these companies quickly so that he can line up candidates for the other company and earn commissions from both.

Another issue is that my total experience is 2.8 years, but on my resume, I have stated my total experience as 3 years. I faced some difficulties during my engineering, leading to it taking 5 years to complete. Neither of the employers is aware of these details.

Are there any risks of being caught during a background check due to concealing my difficulties during engineering and the extra 4 months of work experience?

Which of the companies mentioned above has a stringent background check process?

Should I approach Godrej and present my CTS offer letter to negotiate a revision of my salary?

Firstly, I don't know which world you are living in. You want to grab it all though it's not possible to contain everything. Your consultant is fooling you. He can't get commission from both companies because consultants have a contract in which the candidate has to work a minimum of 30 days; only then their payment or commission is released. Will you join CTS and see if you're comfortable? What kind of immature hopscotching is this? In my opinion, CTS is a better company, and after all, it's paying you more and saving your traveling time as well. Do you really think if you show the CTS offer letter to Godrej, they'll give you a hike? Sorry, I don't think so. Companies have fixed salary slabs; they are already offering you what they can afford. I don't think they'll be happy to haggle with you, at least until you are some hotshot. So you better keep that idea at bay, because this way you might just end up losing both opportunities.

If you have finished your Engineering in 5 years instead of 4, how will you manipulate the degree? If you can, then well and good. As far as your background check is concerned, I don't have any personal experience with either of these companies. So I think only the person who knows can help you. But take it as obvious that both will verify work experience at least because these days companies use external agencies for verification.

What if Godrej wants an employee on an urgent basis (due to their necessity)? In this situation, will they consider a salary hike (I have to take advantage of their necessity)?

I think you should join CTS because it is offering a salary hike similar to what Godrej is offering, and it is much closer to your place. Also, if you waste time thinking, they might hire someone else. You mentioned their position is urgent, so why would they wait for you? Seize that opportunity because although there are many opportunities in the market, there are also numerous job seekers. Don't miss out due to confusion in your mind.

Look buddy... I do not know where you are coming from and how much you know about the corporate world. Companies like Godrej can never be "majboor" to hire a person like you who has faked his experience and who is not sure about what he wants in life or career. Their brand name itself can attract thousands of people dying to join them. Consultants receive their commissions after 30-60 days of joining, and if the candidate referred by them fails to complete the probation period, then they have to replace the candidate free of charge. In this case, I think the consultant is asking you to choose one offer so that she can line up more candidates for the position left by you. She is concerned about her targets and deadlines, as most of us are worried about.

Regarding your idea of first working in one company and later shifting to another... this is a stupid yet most hilarious idea. I do not know how you got that idea.

In the present situation, I think you should join the company that is giving you the best offer. Both companies are equally stringent about reference checks. Hence, if caught, then both these companies will treat you in the same manner.
