HRM Career

As a HRM, merely sticking to recruitment will not help your career. Subject to your aptitude, there are a number of areas you need to explore. Initially, you need to stay close to your core strengths.

1. You can start with:
- Recruitment
- Selection
- Online applicant appraisal
- Psychological tests (you can buy these software)

2. Then you can look at:
- Expertise in compensation/salary development and incentives development.

3. Now you can look at:
- Training (complete a diploma training)
- Management development (diploma in management development)

4. Specializing in industrial relations:
- You can pursue a part-time law degree in industrial relations.

5. Specializing in knowledge management/intellectual property:
- You can pursue a diploma.

So, the sky is the limit.

Dear LEO LINGHAM,

Thank you very much for your advice. There are some certifications like CIPD, IPMN, and SAP HR. What are these? Do they help in a particular domain or are they certifications for anyone? Are there any other additional certifications you would like to tell me about or certifications I must consider?

CIPD - Chartered Institute of Personnel Development

IPMN - Related professional body membership

These are professional bodies whose membership adds value to your status.

SAP HR is a certificate course. This one helps to set up the system and not a career.

Hi Ashish,

I am a PGDBM graduate with a major specialization in HR and a minor in Marketing. Very soon, I will be starting my career as an HR Consultant, primarily focusing on end-to-end recruitment. My goal is to transition into an HR Generalist role within the next 2-3 years. Could you please advise me on additional qualifications that I should pursue to support my career aspirations?

Being your own boss is a unique and invaluable learning experience. It allows you to uncover your strengths and weaknesses, which may remain hidden in a traditional work setting. This self-discovery process is both personally and professionally rewarding.

I am seeking suggestions and tips to help shape my future career path. I welcome insights from experienced professionals that can benefit not only me but also others who are embarking on their careers. Your guidance is highly appreciated.

In the realm of end-to-end recruitment, key aspects include:
- Understanding job profiles
- Proactive headhunting (detailed in previous posts)
- Networking, a crucial skill in today's landscape

Transitioning into an HR Generalist role requires exposure to various HR facets such as Compensation & Benefits, Organizational Development, and Change Management. Practical experience is essential before assuming this role. Consider taking on small HR audit assignments for small companies or seeking guidance from HR peers. Additionally, staying informed through platforms like citehr.com can enhance your preparation.

Wishing you the best of luck on your journey!

Hi Ashish,
Great..nothing like being your own boss and believe me it's the best learning experience …I frankly feel we all HR professionals at some point of time should think or try to be their own boss…as they reveal your strong points & weaknesses which otherwise remains hidden while working…above all its is the best renewal exercise both personally & professionally as well.
End to end recruitment:-
Understanding of job profiles
Proactive head hunting – I have mentioned about this in detail in some postings…
Networking – very very important in today's scenario…
HR – generalist
Need to have an exposure to all facets of HR like C&B, OD, Change Management et all..here its very essential to have hands-on experience before you are ready for this role. Perhaps what you can do is take small assignments like HR audit for small companies or ask your HR friends to assist you on these matters…also active reading of the posting in this citehr.com can prepare you well…
Good Luck!!
