How Do You Celebrate Independence Day at Work? Looking for Fun Office Ideas

kavita HR
Hi all,

Please give me some ideas on how to celebrate Independence Day in the office.

Dimple Shah
Hi Kavita,

Depending on the location and size of your office, have the employees come together and post messages on a large flag about their feelings on what freedom means to them and hang it up in a prominent place. You could also give small flags as they come into the office.

Celebrations can be initiated from the day before itself. In our office, we have decorated our cubicles and the surrounding workplace with tricolor flags. We will also be conducting a flag-hoisting program on August 15th and will have a cultural program.
newsrikanth@gmail.com
Unlike key persons, employees rarely get a chance to voice their feelings and views. So, invite your employees, especially those not in the limelight, to speak on the nation, patriotism, etc. Guide, support, and encourage them to come up with an output. For an HR person, this is a good chance to highlight their skills.

Hi Kavitha,

You can have a dress code that day and give small flags to all the employees and also to the visitors at the security place only. Hope to have a very well-planned Independence Day celebration in your office.

Regards,
Viranchi.

Hi Kavita,

In my organization, we are posting Independence Day posters in each department. Also, we are having a small get-together with songs. We have two teams who will be singing these songs on the 14th of August.

Hi Kavita,

You can organize competitions or skits in which employees can act for maybe 3 to 5 minutes, taking any of the freedom fighters as the main character. Get those small flags that everyone can pin to their clothes. You can have a tricolour day where everyone wears clothes of the color of the flag (a very common practice).

Deepti

Thank you for sharing those ideas. I was also considering implementing a dress code and organizing a song competition. I will do my best to ensure that the event is enjoyable for at least an hour. Songs and poems seem like good options for the competition.

Thank you,

Hi Himani,

We are planning to organize an event and get-together on August 15. I would like to post a message on the notice board of my office regarding the celebration and dress code. Could you please provide some suggestions for the message? Also, if you have any posters available, please share them.

Regards,
Himani

Hi Himani,

You could try event titles like "HINDUSTAAN ZINDABAD" or "HALLA BOL" or "RANG DE BASANTI". Organize some small fun at work concepts, like having a surprise get-together at a common place and a small quiz on Independence Day. Employees could be asked to decorate their workstations in line with the Independence Day theme. Different work teams could be assigned one of the tricolors, and all team members need to dress in the same color. Creativity and fun should be the underlying theme.

Always have small tokens as prizes for all the above events; it keeps the team motivated. Distribute tricolored sweets.

Hope this can be of help.

Does anyone have a short movie on the Independence Day theme? Kindly share if you have.

Hi Kavita,

Please give me some ideas on how to celebrate Independence Day in the office. You can consider following a dress code of the tri-color and decorating the office with tri-color balloons. If you have good singers in the office and a good number of participants, you can organize a patriotic song competition.

I will keep you posted if I come across more ideas!

Hi all,

We are planning to organize a look-alike competition where the team members of each team can dress up like any of the national leaders whom they like the most and write their sayings on the hoarding in front of their bay.

We have decided to decorate the bay with the flag and tricolour balloons. Also, we have plans to distribute flag badges and sweets to all the employees.

Not just that, we have asked everyone to dress up in Khadi/Cotton Kurta for guys and Saree or Chudidhar for girls.

Hi,

You can keep a traditional day and give away prizes to the best male and female traditional dressers. Also, you can decorate your office with balloons in the colors of our flag.

Hi,

All the suggestions given above are great, but here is another one. In my office, we had organized a collage competition with the theme of Independence Day. However, I personally think this is more effective with a group size of 130-150.

Happy Independence Week to all!

Cheers,
Meetali :)
sushma_uday
You can have a dress code of green, orange, and white. You can also have some quizzes on independence topics.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Dear Kavita Sharma,

"One who rocks the cradle wins the world."

1. You may have a song/drawing/poem competition on Bharat Mata.
2. More than that, a brainstorming session on the credo/philosophy/future of your company.
3. The entire program could be open to all the family members of your company.
arpi05
Hi,

We had a Floor Decoration Contest and an Independence Day-related quiz. We asked questions randomly on each floor and gave away small gifts. Having a dress code is a good idea. You can ask your employees to be dressed in the colors - saffron, green, white, navy blue... One doesn't have to wear all the colors. You could also arrange for a chat stall in the office premises as well.

Thanks,
Arpi.

Dear Kavita,

We at our office celebrate Independence Day by doing a "tilak" and by pinning a tricolour flag on the lapel of every employee. The dress code for the day is "traditional wear" with any combination of orange/white/green. All the employees gather in the conference room to start with the National Anthem followed by gift distribution for the best-dressed employee. The Notice Board is decorated with the Independence Day Theme and the office is decorated with tricolour balloons.

Hope you now have a fair idea and you can celebrate it in your office too!

Hi Dimple,

Excellent idea!
Any other suggestions/ideas to celebrate Independence Day? We are also planning to celebrate it in our office.

Advance Independence Day wishes.

Hi,

First of all, decorate your office in the spirit of Independence Day. The office should have that kind of aura. Next, as told by many of my friends, invite participation by all employees by conducting quizzes, slogan, drawing competition, and patriotic song recitation. Dress code is a good idea, but be aware that you should not drape the tricolor in an indecent manner. So, to be on the safe side, don't organize any dress code. Let people come in their casual dress as this is also the weekend day.

Take care,
Rahul Verma

Dear Kavita,

Thank you for the input and ideas. I was also considering implementing a dress code and organizing a song competition. I will do my best to ensure that everyone enjoys the event for at least an hour. Songs and poems are excellent options for the competition.

For the event, you can decide on a dress code for the staff members and organize a function where interested employees can participate in the competition. Towards the end, it would be beneficial to have a senior member from top management share their views on Independence Day.

Thank you,
Kavita Sharma

Hello Kavitha and hello all,

It's great to see so many tips for celebrating the great Independence Day of our country. I would like to add some to the list, like:

(a) Should start with a cultural program
(b) Some sharing of those pre-independence/independence moments
(c) A dance/song program from patriotic movies
(d) Can have a collage of all the things that can represent freedom and independence
(e) Of course, the flag hoisting ceremony
(f) And a delicious Desi khana.

But let me tell you, you might not have all that time in the office to do all these things. To keep it short, you can have the collage, flag hoisting ceremony, and the national anthem on the main broadcast, and some sweets.

That is all I have.

Regards
aparna_nidhi@yahoo.com
Hi, I would suggest celebrating with underprivileged kids. Perhaps you could organize a distribution of books and sweets at a nearby government school to create awareness among kids about what "freedom" truly means. Additionally, having some kids showcase their talents can help them gain awareness and motivation.

Good evening to all CiteHR members,

First of all, tons of thanks to Ms. Kavita for initiating a thread on such a wonderful and useful topic. I am also grateful to all those who have replied with their valuable suggestions, which I am going to apply in my organization. Hope this 61st Independence Day rocks for all of us! Already, 'Abhinav Bindra' has brought a big honor for India with the shining gold medal, one of its kind.

See you after a successful Independence Day celebration at my place.

Dear Kavi,

As an Indian, you should be aware that Independence Day is a national holiday. Therefore, my suggestion is that you involve your employees in the decision-making process and plan the celebration either on the working day before or on the 15th itself, based on the majority's preference.

Hi Kavita! My suggestion is that on the 14th or 15th morning, gather all your employees at any place in your office that has the capacity for all (e.g. assembly point, reception hall, conference hall, etc.) and give a brief about the day. Finally, play the National anthem. In my opinion, it is the best way to celebrate Independence Day.

Jai Bharat!

Sir,

This is a glorious day for every Indian. In my point of view, we all have to celebrate and enjoy this day like other festivals. We have realized all freedom fighters.

Hi,

I know I'm late to announce and give inputs, but maybe for the future, you can organize a debate competition between businesses. Desk decoration with a theme, dress code, playing the national anthem via emails, or arranging to salute the nation on this day.

Hey! I wanted some ideas on how to celebrate Christmas festival online with employees on site. Please help.

We are planning to conduct some fun events on Independence Day with people from different countries—Indian, Sri Lankan, Filipino, Pakistani, and more. Can you give some inputs on activities that are fully entertaining and promote team-building among colleagues, all of whom are new joiners? Additionally, could you provide some suggestions for improving presentation skills or any other ideas?

It's a hands-on event for everyone, aiming to create a celebration that energizes and enthuses, ultimately bringing happiness and fostering closer interactions among all participants.

Please suggest any ideas as this is my first time organizing such an event. I am eagerly awaiting your messages. You can also email me at [Email Removed For Privacy Reasons] for any invitation cards or to motivate others to contribute ideas.

Thank you so much to each one for being here. See you soon.

Thanks,
Hari
