Torn Between a Private Job and a Government Offer: When Should I Tell My Boss and What Should I Choose?

Hi Everybody,

I am working for a Pvt Ltd. company. I have received a government job offer, but the process would take another 3-5 months to receive the appointment letter. Should I inform my current company about this, and when should I inform them?

I have not yet been allocated a department and location, so I am still waiting for that information.

Also, please advise me on which option to choose: should I go for the government job or continue with my current private job?

In government jobs, individuals may feel limited in using their creativity and innovation. Promotions may be scarce, and the progression within the government sector may seem slow. As a government servant myself, I have experienced only one promotion in my 20 years of service.

You have a hell of a lot of time to get the offer. Why are you confused now? Also, government jobs are not worth it nowadays, I hope. Most people earn in private companies very soon, save for the future, and then stop working after a certain age. They can also start a business or work related to their previous jobs in the future. Don't tell anything to your current company about it and do your job peacefully.

If you feel that your government job will be secure, you can decide to leave when you receive the offer letter. As Mr. Ashok said, government jobs are not a good option nowadays since there is limited personal and knowledge growth.

I'm working in a Central Government Organization on a contractual position. The job is somewhat easy; you get lots of free time in which you can do part-time business, jobs, etc., and earn more money. Job security is also a benefit.

Another great aspect of Government Jobs is the pension and other facilities provided. Even the concept of offering jobs on compassionate grounds is highly beneficial. It helps the families of government servants in distress. I've seen many people I know join Government Service because their father passed away while in service. This opportunity not only provides assurance but also employment opportunities for the relatives of government servants.

These facilities are not typically provided by private companies. In today's world, it can be challenging to thrive in the private sector. You may need to bring others down to move up.

Now, frankly speaking, I am a diabetic patient working for a consultancy where I have to achieve my targets, but there are no proper requirements and also the Business Development Executive (BDE) is missing.

As always, my sugar levels are well-controlled. However, this time, during a routine blood sugar check-up, my sugar levels were high, and my blood pressure was also elevated. The doctor says it is due to stress and has advised me to either quit my job or take a long leave. At this point in time, what should I do?

Nowadays, stress has become a common thing in everybody's life. In your case, you have not mentioned what kind of government job you have got and what your present job is. As far as stress is concerned, some jobs in both government and private sectors are the same. Therefore, carefully evaluate the benefits, threats, and opportunities of both jobs before making a decision. Once you decide to join the government job, you can inform your current management about your resignation date.

Thank you, Sasi. Yes, even the doctor advised me the same as you. Anil - As I said, I am a recruiter in a consultancy where I need to achieve my targets. Nowadays, there are no proper requirements where we can generate revenue. There is no Business Development Executive (BDE) in our company to generate business. In this scenario, we should achieve our given target. The company is not bothered about the type of requirement but only about the billing. I have secured a typist job in the government with better pay.

Here are a few things to be considered. Why did you choose this current position? Is this your passion or financial requirement? If it is for financial reasons, then you could consider a government job (less stress, limited working hours, and other benefits, etc.). Otherwise, choose another organization where there is less stress and ample opportunity for job satisfaction and career growth.

Here are a few tips that I believe can help in overcoming stress:

1. Firstly, accept that stress is a part of modern life.
2. Engage in regular exercises like yoga, meditation, and, of course, maintain a good diet.
3. Read religious books as they can teach us ways to live happily.
4. If possible (financially and in other aspects), consider leaving the job and pursuing a profession that you truly enjoy.
