Is Working 9 Hours a Day for 6 Days Legal Under the Factory Act? Seeking Clarity

outlook
Dear seniors,

Please guide.

As per the Factory Act, weekly hours should not exceed 48, and daily hours should not exceed 9 hours. I have observed some companies working for 6 days at 9 hours per day (9:30 AM to 6:30 PM). Is this practice illegal? Please clarify.

Hi Ashish,

When working hours are from 9:30 am to 6:30 p.m., you need to reduce 1/2 hour for lunch so it becomes 8.30 hours per day. Even if you work 6 days a week, it totals 51.00 hours. The maximum allowed is 48 hours, so 3 hours extra should be okay.
