Salary Structure Dilemma: Can You Request a Specific Pay Breakdown from Your Employer?

Hi all,

Please help me with this. Once the company decides on your package, can we ask them to pay the salary in the required structure (i.e., breakup in salary)?

Salary Structure

For the lower-level employees, the broad guidelines include:
- Base salary
- Dearness allowance
- Bonus for performance (if any)
- Overtime payment

Normally, these are shown in the payment slip.

For the senior levels, it is:
- Total salary

As per your email, my understanding is that you have been provided with a structure and you would like it to be altered.

If my understanding is correct, then the answer is: It purely depends on what kind of relationship you have with the concerned HR person and how helpful they are. Generally, people seek to alter the structure to save on taxes. In such a scenario, most companies would assist employees in adjusting their salary structure to save them some money. However, the total amount payable would remain unchanged.

Hi,

Yes, definitely, you can ask for the breakup as every organization has a complete breakdown of the salary components. Typically, there are three components: Fixed salary, Variable salary, and benefits.

Fixed salary includes Basic, DA, HRA, PF, PT, SA (this includes earnings as well as deductions).

Variable salary includes Special allowance, Project allowances, Bonus, Performance pay, Incentive, etc.

The benefits part includes car plan, Holiday package, Leased accommodation, Telephone, Medical/Hospitalization schemes, etc.

All these together form CTC... and I am quite sure these can be discussed before making a decision.

Dear All,

Salary structure depends on company norms. It determines the basic salary, Dearness Allowance (DA), and Travel Allowance (TA). All sub-items are divided in a 100 ratio. Following this, deductions such as TDS, PF, ESI, etc., are made, leading to the net salary.
