Feeling Stuck in Recruitment? Seeking Advice on Transitioning to Core HR Roles

Hi All,

I am working in an IT company for the last 2.5 years, and my KRAs revolve around recruitments only. Can anyone please help me by providing information on consultancies dealing with HR executive openings? I really want to move ahead and learn more by shifting towards the core HR area. Seniors, please help me by furnishing any information regarding HR executive openings!

Hi Shipra,

Am not sure if you have been given the right inputs as far as the list of consultancies for HR openings in your city – just use the tool of Google.

Your focus should be on structuring your profile to catch the attention of the Hirers/decision makers for which you need to do serious introspection on your skill sets and the Goals you have made for your life and career. This should be linked to your passion and areas of interests.

Also remember, as a recruiter gives one a knowledge of the industries, processes, trends on compensation, collecting the pool of the potential candidates for future references, culture of the companies, Training programs etc – a bird's eye view of the external elements of the industry which HR generalist may not get the same outlook as they tend to have intra company's process approach.

Hi Shipra,

I am presently working with an IT company located in Gurgaon. Could you please cite some of the probable reasons as to why you are looking for a change from a recruitment role to a Generalist role? I have 1.8 years of experience in IT and Telecom hiring. I have worked for some major Telecom sector companies across India as part of a consulting company for the initial 6 months. Later, I got an opportunity from a US-based MNC where I am a part of the Hiring team.

Ok, well, going by your post, I don't want to discourage you, but getting a core HR profile will be a little tough. It's not impossible; you can achieve it with some focus and loads of perseverance. There is an abundance of people with core HR experience, so why would a company choose you? You should evaluate yourself in that context. You ought to have a management degree.

I would suggest you request your company's HR department to transfer you to HR as these days internal mobility is a very common trend. Things may work out this way! Otherwise, you would need to hone your skills, gain loads of knowledge about HR processes, and if you are lucky, you may get a chance. However, with 2+ years of experience, you would have to start from scratch, either as a trainee or an executive. I have a wealth of experience with the same; both bitter and sweet, so I am telling you very clearly.

On second thought, staying in recruitments is a very nice choice. Although you may find it monotonous, these days HR has been diversified. Recruitment professionals in many places are earning more than HR professionals. Jokes aside!
