Fisrt set a target;
1. if your present CTC is 4 lacs p.a decide you will ask for a hike of 60% i.e yuor CTC should be 6.4 lacs.
2. Also decide how far you can be flexible in case the interviewer is not agreed to pay that much.
3. Think about the job profile- compare it with your present job profile- are you going to add any value addition
4. Think about the perks associated.
5. Ask about medical allowance, medical insurance, car facility, lunch facility
6. Bonus, incentive etc.

Hi Kazai,

Negotiating for the salary is hardest part of the interview process especially with HR people!:p

The main hurdle is that you have to clear the interview process and prove to them that you are the right person for the job..

The following tips may assist you..
  • Don’t negotiate in the first round of interview – if asked politely mention that you would discuss it at later stage. Emphasis that the role n profile is more important and relevant than the compensation.
  • Invariably if you are shortlisted – they would make an offer – please turn down the same in a pleasant manner!.
  • Focus on the % increase on the net take home..it’s a smart strategy!..have seen the smart people doing the same.
  • Check the salary range offered for the position you have been selected through the websites like monster.com and other job portals ..do a research before you meet them.
  • If you have inside contact..do try to find out the value for the post by checking out the compensation of the person whom you are being hired.
  • Maintain the contact and spell out your expectations to decision maker than to HR people.
More importantly maintain your cool..:p

Best wishes,

Rajat
