Skill Matrix in Manufacturing: How Do You Use It for Operator Training?

I would like to know about the skill matrix for operators in the manufacturing industry. If any of you are following a skill matrix for your operators, kindly guide me.

Hi Suji,

For the preparation of a skill matrix, you can follow the following method:

1) Identify the number of operations on the line.
2) Out of the total number of operations identified, further identify the critical operations.
3) On a 4 or 5 point basis (e.g., 1 - cannot perform, 2 - can perform with supervision, 3 - can perform independently, 4 - can train others), find out where the current workers fall. This needs to be done for all the regular workers at least.
4) Based on the above criteria, you can understand where the workforce currently stands in terms of their skill level and where you want to take them.

All the above activities require great support, especially from the management and supervisors.
