Income Tax Basics

Dear Friends and Seniors,
please advice me on the basics that one should be knowing in relation to Income Tax.
I have a non commerce back ground, working for a leading HR Consulting Company. I am keep to understand Income Tax and also a bit about basic that goes in to planning compensation.
please help me understand.
