Seeking Simple Guidance on Income Tax Basics for Non-Commerce Professionals in HR

Please advise me on the basics that one should know in relation to Income Tax. I have a non-commerce background and work for a leading HR Consulting Company. I am keen to understand Income Tax and also learn a bit about the basics that go into planning compensation. Please help me understand.
