Dear Friends,
I have never been a proper HR professional officially, but throughout my career, I have been performing HR duties.
Let me share an experience: wishing on special days really makes a lot of difference.
In my last company, I introduced a system of wishing employees not by buying a card but by sending a plain image of flowers, cake, balloons, and a verse for birthday wishes. We would take a printout on plain paper (not necessarily a color printout) and get it signed by all those who wanted to wish the person. Initially, we started by individuals contributing for the cake, later the company started sponsoring it. During the noon tea time, a small gathering would take place, the cake would be cut, and the birthday wish signed by all would be given. Believe me, it worked wonders, and even today, after 5-6 years, you will find all employees preserving their birthday wish paper in their files.
Taking a step further, with the management's help, we introduced sending a small flower bouquet worth just Rs 50-60/- to employees on their birthdays and anniversaries. The flowers would reach them early in the morning, around 6 am. I am sure that such practices really boost employee morale.
The most important thing is that this applies to all employees on the payroll, starting from the pantry staff, security guards, cleaners, to the Managing Director.
Even after 1.5 years of my departure from that organization, all the former employees are more than 100% sure that the first call on their mobile or the first email in their inbox on their special days will be from me. This feeling itself brings me immense happiness. This is a tried and tested formula. Give it a shot. It is truly wonderful and very satisfying.
I am attaching a sample of the type of email that I send to friends wishing them.
Best Regards,
Bharathi
