The man who was traveling to Milan was the first person the man met. The second person has seven wives. As each of the seven wives has 12 sons (12 x 7 = 84) and 12 daughters (12 x 7 = 84), the total number of sons of the daughters would be 336 (84 x 4 = 336). The granddaughters of the second man, daughters of the daughters (588), and grandsons (588) would be 588 each. The sons' daughters (336) and friends of the granddaughters (3796, calculated as 588 + 336 = 924 x 4 = 3796) add up to a total of 5821, not 420.
