Confused About Sodexo Coupons? Seeking Guidance on Process and Contacts

We are planning to give Sodexo coupons to our employees but have no details as to whom to contact and what is the process or limitations. I would appreciate any info in this regard.

Saturday's Economic Times headline said that Food Coupons will now come under the tax bracket, so why get into the mess. Simply give the money to the employees.

Many organizations are doing that now.

Sadly, nothing. The Finance Ministry seems to be getting tough on all the leakages that are taking place in the system. Sodexo coupons were supposed to be only for food items, but they were being widely used to buy many other things at the retail mall.

Very soon, the country will have a clear IT process - which means no more coupons, reimbursements, free trips, etc. All will be taxed at the hands of employees.

Our company also provides Sodexo meal passes for employees. You can check with Mr. Arvind at 9886340505, whom I handle for the same.

Look for FBT article on the front page of ET of last Saturday. You can also search for it on ET website. The taxes have to be paid from April 2009. Many companies have already started deducting taxes.

These Sodexo coupons/passes are not accepted in many good stores like Big Bazaar, Spencer, D-Mart, etc. If accepted, they could be useful; otherwise, not worth distributing.

I don't agree with jnprady. I am using Sodexo, and it is accepted in all major shops. In Big Bazaar, they accept it only for food items, but in Spencer, they accept it for everything. This is my experience.

I don't understand using SODEXO for all. Just understand the basic economics. The more steps in the trader's chain, the costlier things get. This is not for us. Just pay simple tax. In your pay fixation, reduce the amount of the meal amount on Sodexo.

Understanding SODEXO's Profit Model

1. SODEXO is a company that aims to make profits. It's not for serving people, so the amount of SODEXO coupons includes their share of profits. Just say a 22% operating margin.

2. This service is included in SERVICE TAX, so the government gets its share at 12.5% indirectly.

3. You will get all things at MRP, so you surrender your right to bargain. Those who accept SODEXO coupons never accept coupons at bargain prices.

4. If you encash it with a shopkeeper, the shopkeeper deducts 15-20%. The maximum income tax rate is 30%, which is cheaper than all this. It is also better for our country to give INCOME TAX than for other companies to make a profit from YOU. SAMAJO BHAI SAMJO

Sodexo Meal Pass Benefits

Sodexo Meal Pass is given as a meal/food benefit to employees. You can provide up to Rs 50 per meal, which amounts to Rs 100-Rs 135 per day multiplied by the number of working days in a month—let's say 22. Hence, you can offer a Sodexo pass worth Rs 135 x 22 per month to employees irrespective of grade. However, if you want to maintain some hierarchy, you can start with Rs 100 at grade 1 and go up to Rs 135 at higher levels.

We are using Sodexo vouchers, but the calculation you have shown is not correct. It is a way to offer meal benefits to employees, which is flexible and tax-friendly as well. The company pays not more than 3-5% to provide a very good benefit to employees, which helps in employee motivation and retention. Employees also save from 10% to 30% of what they get, which is an added advantage. Sodexo is also accepted at restaurants and fast-food chains, which helps in using them.
