Dear All,

Great Reading Rajat as always your post are simply great. As for my fresher friends, I would like to quote one of my teachers who once told us " Always keep trying and stick to what is right. Opportunity will come to you one day. And on that day you should not say, if only I had not left it" He was speaking to a group of aspiring CAs.

Let me just add a real life example. Just think of the position of Civil Engineers 7 years from ago and think of them now. I had know people with Civil backgound sweating it out in some remote places in India risking their life, staying away from their families a drawing a meagre salary carrying out medium civil projects with not very bright futures.Even the Engineering Colleges kept Civil Engineering for students with lower ranks. Then the infrastructural boom happened and these people who have been sweating out with such low pay are now enjoying one of the best paying jobs in the country. All of them who I know stuck to what they know and did best and once the opportunity came they cashed in.

Alway remember what Edsion said " I wish people knew how much closer they were to success when they left trying"

Hi Pearl,

Follow Rajat's advice. I would also like to gift you some pearls which i learnt in my career. Hope it is helpful to you.

1.You cannot negotiate your salary as a fresher. first year of your career is to learn.

2. Don't just learn also stretch your time and stretch your work while learning. Theres a saying, "if you work more than you earn in the beginning you will earn more than you work later".

3. Make yourself indespinsible. I always tell this to my students. There is a school of thought that says, "nobody's indispensable, world goes on as it is even without you". But i would say, "Don't go with the common line of thinking, as an MBA you ought to contribute towards changes to the company not just participate in the routine activity.By doing this you become indispensible.

4. Can you identify areas for improvement and initiate changes? you could if you keep an open mind and learn first.

5. Your value as a professional would increase if you learn to be creative and different. For this you have to observe and learn who are successful in your work area. You will always remember your first job because you will get wealth of information, experience and learning.

Don't hesitate to take that first step. Develop the right attitude.

So, cheer up girl, and get going. All the best to you.

Hi Pearl,
First Job is always a school of everyone's life.In the first year of your career never do expect for money.Expect for wisdom.It do come with continuous learning.
The more you learn in the beginning days of your career the more you do utilise it in later days of your career.
One year before my thinking is also like as you.But now i realized many things,learnt many things and dealth with many situations.I dont say that now i am a perfect and well equipped HR Professional. But i can say one thing is that i am a much matured person now when compared to one year back.
My advice is that never go behind money,go behind knowledge.
Once knowledge is with you rest do come to you automatically.
So cheer up and join in any comapny which do give you the oppurtunity to learn.So cheers Pearl and i wish you a successful career.

u must be really worked up as uve written ur topic 4 times :lol:

im relieved to know tat im not the only one caught up in a storm. however im not in the least pleased to know tis.

u must have read many replies by now to my topic. i really appreciate their inputs. i'll add somethin which was told to me by an hr exec.

the 1st yr or min 6 mts of ur job will involve doin mostly odd jobs. not much responsibility will be given here as ur still in the learning process urself. eg responsibilities like trng, comp and bens etc will not be given to u in d first yr.

ru told just to screen thru cvs, arrange for ints etc?? tis is common for every hr exec's first job.

so dont get disappointed and start thinkin like me or else u'll be like tis even at ur workplace and may miss out tat silver lining which may appear. and plz dont change jobs frequently or else u may be tagged as a job hopper.

also wait for the right opportunity to come along. take up a job which u like and not the one which comes first to grab. rem, ive been advised to take up jobs even though they dont seem appropriate for me. however i have stuck to my decision of taking up somethin which i like and am happy for the same.

and plzzzzzzzzz stay on ur job for at least a yr as the first yr goes only in learning the organisational functions.

here's one thing u can do. side by side work on a proj which relates to ur industry. gather data which maybe useful for the org where u work. then surprise ur seniors with a presentation on the same. this will work as a motivational tool on ur part, and will develop a need for recognition on part of ur seniors. but plzzzzzzzzzz dont mess up. have d figs and facts correct. u'll have to be 200% right to impress them.

ALL D BEST. DONT WORRY EACH ONE OF US HAS SOMETHIN GOOD IN STORE FOR EM. :lol:

If I summarize the advice given to you I can say Never Loose Your Heart Especially When Circumstances Are Not Favorable. We have often seen that a person grows more under adverse circumstances. Here, I don’t mean to say that we should invite problems but if we are put under some unwanted situation then we should fight it out bravely.

I have certain doubts so please help me out.
Will starting with a consultancy firm effect my career in long run? Is it difficult to break in corporate once you enter consultancy?
Also tell me that being on the payroll of some company while working for other effect your career?

Dear Subhra,
The answer to your First question:
1) Yes, if you are working for consultancy firm, it will affect your career, since the pattern of work,responsibility and methods differs. You will find it difficult to get jobs in areas which require overall exposure. You field will become narrow to the extent the field you are consulting. For example, HR working in a Placement Consultancy will get a job as Manager - Recruitment, but it is difficult to get a job as Manager-HR.
2) To the second question, I would like to say, Yes some Company's do differentiate but again some Companies dont. It is upto the Company. One thing I can tell you is this that with the growth in economy, there is such a shortage of efficient and capable manpower, you will get recruited if you fit the profile. The Companies which differentiate are now been compelled to take whoever they find in this period of crunch, suiting their profile.
