Hi,

Psychology, like any other science, stands on assumptions about human behaviour. Challenging some of psychology's most basic assumptions, Richard Bandler and John Grinder innovated Neuro-Linguistic Programming [NLP] - a modern approach to human behaviour / development.

It's good to remember that while making assumptions, we further assume that assumptions should be rational...

People assumed very rationally that the earth is flat, and went ahead studying the firmament... And, it looked very foolish when a scientist said the earth is round!

It was very rational assumptions that made scientists to ridicule wright brothers attempting to fly...

Yet, most breakthrough comes by breaking assumptions! And, it takes time for people to digest radically new discoveries. Often, such discoveries meet with protests and disbeliefs.

NLP makes - what John Grinder calls - 'unreasonable' assumptions...

For instance, NLP assumes no one is broken! People are just making the best behavioural choice available to them... If you want behaviour to change, provide people with more behavioural options to choose from! And, we do have in us most of the resources we need for our development...

On the other hand, traditional psychology assumes some are broken while others are not. And, the resources to help a broken person comes from experts in the form of electric shocks, drugs, or long hours of counselling.

There is no use disputing assumptions. Rather look at what an assumption can help achieve.

Start with children: some children, who are not able to sit through the system of education are diagnosed as having a 'deficiency' in their ability to pay attention to their teachers, or to given tasks... And, measuring the degree of their 'deficiency' drugs are prescribed to them, to 'quieten' them,

NLP assumptions will make you think the child already has the capacity to pay attention to things... And, it's upto the psychologist to help the child locate that resource, and access it.

Most children diagnosed of ADD/ADDHD do watch TV with rapt attention, often, forgetting to eat the food kept before them... What if the teacher makes his/her lessons as attractive as the TV channel presenting its stories?

Traditional psychology assumes some are more intelligent than others; And, goes on to measure intelligence on scales, ranking people. We talk of children with 'learning disabilities'... Yet, how may of adults can understand the story shown on the cartoon channel, including teachers, as much as these kids with 'learning disability' can?

If you want to go the NLP way of assuming and approaching the world, I suggest, you start with reading:

1. Frogs into Princes, by Grinder & Bandler, 1979

2. Using Your Brain—for a CHANGE, by Richard Bandler, 1984

For a free download of an Application of NLP Assumptions and Techniques to psychosocial transformation of rural leaders, you may have a look at the NLP Training Manual I authored for the International Labour Organization at:

More than the decision on what branch of psychology you want to study, deciding what approach you want to take to psychology could be of greater help!

All the best.
