Shobha Pradhan
Hi,
An employee of my organization has applied for sabbatical leave of 1.5 years to get himself enrolled for distance learning programme. My question is that do we have HR policy of giving sabbatical leave for Distance learning programmes.
Thanks

Sabbatical leave is a long leave given to employees. The importance of this leave is that this leave will not create any break in service and therefore, it is granted on special occasions only. Sabbatical leave is not a right of employee under any Labour Act but it is purely a welfare scheme of the company.
Normally, sabbatical leave is not given to pursue any distance learning program but it is available for full time Post Graduate or Doctoral programs. If you do not have such clause in your HR policy, it is always good if, at this time itself, give an interpretation that this leave is granted only for full time course and not for distance learning for which there is no need of attending any regular sessions, failing which you will get repeated requests for sabbatical leave quoting this as a precedence and you will end up in problems.
