I would like to get views from this forum on .. Keeping 'promotion cycle of employees confidential' is good way or not?

Dear Raj,

Just think for a while simple thing. On what occasion employee promotion takes place? It takes place when business expands or grows or vacancies are created because of the employee attrition at the top. Cycle of the promotion is decided by these two factors.

A very prominent transport company had a rule. Either employee should get promotion in five years or move the employee out of organisation. No employee was allowed to work in same designation for more than five years. This rule was valid till 2008. Come recession and the rule has vanished. The promotion rule has gone topsy-turvy and somebody has got promotion after 7-8 years or did not get at all.

Therefore, find out what factors are applicable to your company. However, particular employee can be designated for future position and he/she needs to be groomed also. HR can do this and if it is done it is more than sufficient.
