Hi, I am suggesting you that please move with employees, mangers, understanding business process. find the gaps where the system is not implemented. check the all policies are made or not.
1) Start the day by greeting your staff.
2) know your staff by name, even if he were a sweeper. Personal touch is the basis for HR function.
3) Browse your mails. Segregate them into urgent and important. Attend the urgent first.
4) Go through your date diary and see whether any statutory compliances need to be complied on that day or any meetings scheduled on that day. Make diarising dates a habit.
5) Solve grievances promptly,if not they may become potential disputes latter.
These are few basic functions to stat your work.

I am not wishing to be rude or provocative here, but I appear to be missing something in this post.
How did you get a job as HR Manager if you do not know how to be a HR Manager?
There are many postings here on CiteHR about people who get jobs and then come to the site to find out how to do their jobs!
This makes no sense to me.
The recruitment processes followed by Indian companies seems to be totally different to that followed by other countries. For example, here in Australia, we recruit, interview and employ on the basis that the candidate has the skills, experience, and capability to do the job.
As a Manager, you are going to have to exert some authority over staff members. If you do not have the skills and knowledge, some staff members may look for opportunities to take advantage of your weaknesses.

May be the intention of Taimour is to get the different practices which the HR Manager are following in different organisation. Instead of following the Stereotype he may wants to do the things differently.

you have joind as a Manager-HR,Note your J.D.then you read Standing order if there, Labour / H.S.E policy,
How's the management commitment & responsiveness, labour industrial relation and suggestion feedback mechanism 's there.
Need to check out previous legal /statutory compliance documents,
also please motivate to your team your team will do a lots work.

The main works of Manager HR In any organization is following.
1. Manpower Planning
2. Recruitment
3. Induction to new joiners
4. Training
5. Motivation
6. Performance Appraisal
7. Promotions,Transfers and Demotions
8. Retirement,apart from these policies,welfare to employees,
9.Employee retention
10. Full and final Settlement
These all above said work is generally done by Manager HR, but you will have to do the work as per assigned by your Seniors that is related to statutory compliance , HR & IR related issues formulating HR Policy, Liaison with Govt. body etc .
