I do not know what your professional background is other than your desire to pursue an MBA in HR. Let me share my views: HR, in principle, is the most important function in an organization if its essence is understood and practiced. Many HR personnel and MBA graduates perform their roles mechanically, focusing on tasks like filling in forms, completing training calendars, and carrying out activities reminiscent of government office clerks from the old days when the department was known as Personnel.

If you aspire to excel in HR, it is crucial that you possess extreme compassion for both people and the organization. This field is more about emotions than intelligence, although I do not mean to imply that HR lacks intelligence. Often, HR professionals are detached and uninvolved with the individuals whose destinies they influence, functioning more like machine operators. If you are an engineer considering an MBA in HR, it could be beneficial for you to gain practical experience in a manufacturing setting as a regular graduate before delving into HR, to better understand the practical challenges before seeking solutions.

Take inspiration from Mahindra & Mahindra, where engineers with experience and an MBA in HR staff the HR and Training departments at their new Chakan plant. Look into best HR practices at Toyota (refer to "Toyota Culture" by Jeffrey Liker & Michael Hoseus, published by Tata-McGraw Hill) to see how advanced HR functions can be. Western cultures often struggle with implementing such practices.

In conclusion, HR is an art that is approached as a science. The wisdom lies in blending the two approaches seamlessly. True HR does not seek power; instead, it nurtures a sense of responsibility in others and within the HR professionals themselves. All the best.

Harish Patel.

Thank you, Mr. Harish. I am a graduate of Commerce and currently in my first year of an MBA program. I am very interested in the HR field. Although I have no real-time experience yet, I want to learn about the real-time duties of HR in an organization.
