I have a project to create a Skill Matrix and conduct a GAP analysis to develop competencies. I would appreciate your suggestions on how to proceed with this task. Please advise, or if you have any case studies or templates, kindly share them.

When making the skills matrix, you should look at the steps below, which will help you in creating an effective Skills Matrix:

- Identify the Job Responsibilities, and if you don't have them, then write the JDs.
- Define KRAs / KPIs.
- Competencies (Identify the Skills & Training requirements for each individual).

Based on the above, you may start creating the Skills Matrix for each individual.

Sample Template:

Name of Individual Skill 1 Skill 2 Skill 3 Skill 4 Skill 5 .........................

ABC Give Rating Give rating .................................................. ....................... (1 to 5)

XYZ Give Rating Give rating .................................................. ....................... (1 to 5)

With this, you will be able to identify the gaps of each individual and provide them with the required training.

In fact, you can identify the individuals who are stronger in different competencies and make them trainers for the other individuals who need training in those competencies. This way, you are empowering the individual by giving them additional responsibilities.
