Key Skills for Talent Acquisition

Primary skill - should have a keen eye to find talent. It's like picking up diamonds from stones.

Next important skill - should be able to mold stones into useful shapes and get the best productivity from any stone. Not all stones are diamonds, and business has to go on even without diamonds.

Last but not least - Some stones are not too hard to be called stones. They are pseudo. One such can make a few other productive stones useless. Need to be able to identify such non-productive and counter-productive stones from the lot.

Hi Ekta, I am not so sure about molding stones, but yes, one thing I can pick out of it... there are companies who proudly advertise with this statement: "We pick the stones and deliver the diamonds." Well, not related to this subject.

Qualities of a Good HR Person

A good HR person should have these qualities:

- Should be punctual
- Should be fair to ideas and negotiations
- Should adopt changes
- Should take initiatives
- Should have leadership skills and be team-oriented
- Should have a good command of language and knowledge of the company's business
- Should actively listen to his/her subordinates
- Should carry good body language and maintain a good personality
- Should have good interpersonal skills
- Should be down-to-earth and easily approachable

In addition to these qualities, I would suggest you focus on these points:

- Refer to some web sources/books for "Reading Body Language"
- Try to read the other person's unsaid words
- Bring an interaction into a "discussion" mode
- "Following-up" on things/matters is a nice habit of a good HR person
- Be more communicative and approachable

Remember, you are the first face of the organization for a newcomer. So keep cheering and value the company's ethics.

Ekta, a recruiter primarily deals with new resources and should be able to identify the most useful and recruitable among them all. It is not an inherited skill but a process-driven exercise necessary for an HR function. A recruiter should be able to read the urgency and find the best fit, which may not always be the best resource in the industry.

Employability Skills of the Best Employee

Picking from Anil's guidelines, I could differentiate the best employee of an organization, including an HR recruiter. The best employee should have the following skills, which I call the Employability skills:

- Should be punctual
- Should be fair to ideas and negotiations
- Should adopt changes
- Should take initiatives
- Should have leadership skills and be team-oriented
- Should have a good command over language and the company's business
- Should listen actively to his/her subordinates
- Should carry good body language and maintain a good personality
- Should have good interpersonal skills
- Should be down to earth and easily approachable

In addition to these skills, some additional skills that would improve interactions with the boss and peers include:

- Refer to some web sources/books for 'Reading Body Language'
- Try to read the other person's unsaid words
- Bring an interaction into 'discussion' mode
- 'Following-up' on things/matters is a nice habit of a good HR person
- Be more communicative and approachable

Role of an HR Recruiter

Typically, an HR recruiter works with department managers to help them fill new or vacant positions with candidates that fit their needs. They create job descriptions (JDs) and post listings, screen applications, reach out to potential hires, arrange and schedule interviews, and work with applicants to determine their strengths and weaknesses.

Qualities of an HR Recruiter

Some of the qualities an HR recruiter must possess are:

- Great communication skills: A recruiter must be comfortable talking on the phone and having numerous face-to-face conversations throughout the day.
- Payroll management: This is a subject related to both the accounts and HR departments. They have to work jointly and smoothly without making any mistakes in processing.
- Statutory compliance: In HR, this refers to the legal framework within which organizations operate. HR professionals need to have basic knowledge of the same.
- Industry relations: This involves the relationship between individual or groups of employees and employers, engaging in a way to maximize productive activities.

There are many more skills an HR recruiter should have. He or she needs to be proficient in many areas. To improve your skills, you can undertake practical HR training, which will provide hands-on experience in this domain. One can do this from HR training institutes in Mumbai that provide placement assistance and job-oriented courses.
