Dear All,
A great motivational story...
This is a true story. Some years ago, the following exchange was broadcast on an Open University sociology TV programme. An interviewer was talking to a female production-line worker in a biscuit factory. The dialogue went like this:
Interviewer: How long have you worked here?
Production Lady: Since I left school (probably about 15 years).
Interviewer: What do you do?
Production Lady: I take packets of biscuits off the conveyor belt and put them into cardboard boxes.
Interviewer: Have you always done the same job?
Production Lady: Yes.
Interviewer: Do you enjoy it?
Production Lady: Oh, Yes, it's great, everyone is so nice and friendly, we have a good laugh.
Interviewer (with a hint of disbelief): Really? Don't you find it a bit boring?
Production Lady: Oh no, sometimes they change the biscuits...
My thanks to Shirley Moon for this lovely story, who also points out the following lessons within it:
Do not impose your own needs and ambitions onto other people who may not share them.
Don't assume that things that motivate you will motivate someone else.
Recognize that sources of happiness may vary widely between people.

Maybe the conclusion is that people are happy because of their own reasons, and maybe most of us would be very bored with that kind of job. But this girl finds it motivating! That's something we must count on when we have to encourage people or motivate personnel.

Hello Geeta,
The story basically talks about intrinsic motivation and a positive attitude. Intrinsic motivation refers to motivation that comes from inside an individual. An intrinsically motivated person will work on a solution to a problem because the challenge of finding a solution provides a sense of pleasure.

Thank you for the story. It is an interview that discusses the happiness one feels out of a job. Upon critical analysis in the context of Character ethics and Personality ethics by Stephen Covey, she aligns with the level of character ethics, and the so-called personality ethics hold no significance for her.

A very good story.
I often hear friends working in non-IT industries commenting on women who work in IT companies, saying how these women lose out on family life by spending all their time at work. On the other hand, my colleagues in the IT industry look down on women who compromise their career for family and children. I find this story supporting my theory that each person has their own needs that they want to satisfy. What motivates one may not motivate another. And no one is right or wrong in having those needs!
Thanks.
