Dear All,
Though it is not related to HR, I still expect an answer from all of you. I want to teach small children, maybe from class 1 to 10, on my Sunday just to make my Sunday useful. What can I teach them apart from the normal course subjects? Need suggestions.
Regards, Shilpi Kar

Hi there,
You can do cooking like cake and gingerbread with children, make sandwiches, play with clay, paint, teach the alphabet, learn how to do small chores for the house such as swiping the floor, washing dishes, folding clothes, and cleaning beds. You need a fully equipped nursery to be able to do this.

Hi,
A very noble thought... there is lots to be taught. Some of the suggestions have already come in. I would add here to teach them values, ethics, and culture. The words sound big, but I am sure if the dedication is there and the intentions are intense, then you sure can achieve in imparting the same; maybe gradually.
All the best in your efforts.

Dear Shilpi,
Wonderful thought! Please do write to Dr. Mathai Fenn, Ph.D., IIT, CEO Talkshop. He is running several projects that are educational for children yet not directly related to any school's syllabus. If you can get in touch with him, you can put your effort into success in a very well-defined way. If you wish, you may take my reference. Wish you all the best.

The very idea sounds noble. Teach something to build their self-confidence. That's the need of the hour. There are plenty of materials available on the net on this subject. You can get different materials for different age groups. Go ahead, this will be a great job.

Hi Shilpi,
I want to tell you that you can give ideas about our history, like Ramayana and Mahabharata, because these days these things have disappeared. Besides, you can evaluate their weekly work in one day by giving some test papers made by you. One more thing I want to tell you is that it is very important that your kid should know the family history, your history. Try to tell them about you and your family in a story format.
That's all I'm thinking to do with my kid in the future.

How nice of you, Shilpi,
When most of us want to spend time in front of the TV and go out to enjoy with family, you express your wish this way. As my friends opined, a very noble thought indeed.
You can take up Indian mythological stories, epics, and stories from Tenali Raman, Akbar, Birbal, and so on. Our children need moral backing and a firm moral platform. I did this with my child and other children of my relatives and friends. These children, who are now grown up and employed or married, still remember my service and fondly recollect those stories which help them now in many ways in their personal, social, and official problem-solving.
I suggest this to you, my dear.
All the best,
Ganesh

Hi Shilpi,
Nice thoughts which I'm hopeful will get manifested in the right action.
What I suggest is to get associated with some NGO that takes care of street kids. These NGOs are always in need of people who have the urge to give to these kids. Search Google to find out addresses of such NGOs, like Bachpan, who need people like you.
There are other organizations as well, like Sumaitri, a NDMC supported organization working for the cause of distressed people with suicidal tendencies. Volunteers have to attend the calls of distressed callers and help them win their confidence. Their contact number is 23389090, CP, Delhi.
For more details, please let me know.

Regular studies are provided to students at school, but they receive minimal guidance on self-management. I believe it would be beneficial for them to learn skills such as time management, goal setting, concentration, communication skills, and, most importantly, ethical values. Thanks

First of all, my heartfelt congratulations to you on my submission. Teach them the basic behavioral skills that you must have acquired during your childhood: respect for elders, ability to give, working with an open mind, playing in the grass (when it's hot), and of course, teach them prayers, respect, and gratitude.

This is a very wonderful idea. I think you should teach them values, ethics, and culture so that it will help them to develop their personality. For that purpose, please refer to Abraham Lincoln's "Letter to the Headmaster".
My son starts school today. It is all going to be strange and new to him for a while, and I wish you would treat him gently. It is an adventure that might take him across continents, all adventures that probably include wars, tragedy, and sorrow. To live this life will require faith, love, and courage.
So dear Teacher, will you please take him by his hand and teach him things he will have to know, teaching him - but gently, if you can. Teach him that for every enemy, there is a friend. He will have to know that not all men are just, that not all men are true. But teach him also that for every scoundrel, there is a hero, that for every crooked politician, there is a dedicated leader.
Teach him if you can that 10 cents earned is of far more value than a dollar found. In school, teacher, it is far more honorable to fail than to cheat. Teach him to learn how to gracefully lose and enjoy winning when he does win.
Teach him to be gentle with people, tough with tough people. Steer him away from envy if you can and teach him the secret of quiet laughter. Teach him if you can - how to laugh when he is sad, teach him there is no shame in tears. Teach him there can be glory in failure and despair in success. Teach him to scoff at cynics.
Teach him if you can the wonders of books, but also give time to ponder the extreme mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and flowers on a green hill. Teach him to have faith in his ideas, even if everyone tells him they are wrong.
Try to give my son the strength not to follow the crowd when everyone else is doing it. Teach him to listen to everyone, but teach him also to filter all that he hears on a screen of truth and take only the good that comes through.
Teach him to sell his talents and brains to the highest bidder but never to put a price tag on his heart and soul. Let him have the courage to be impatient, let him have the patience to be brave. Teach him to have sublime faith in himself, because then he will always have sublime faith in mankind, in God.
This is the order, teacher, but see what best you can do. He is such a nice little boy, and he is my son.

Dinesh

You can always benefit from Vedic mathematics and some innovative ways to learn and remember, such as memory games. Such techniques will help improve creativity and memory, both for the learners and for you.

Noble thought! My sincere appreciation may please be accepted.
In this information age, the habit of reading is fast fading. See if you can group these kids into different age groups and encourage them to read some good books/articles.
If you decide to do this, please let me know. I wish to donate some books.
