Dear Friend,
Many of you confused it with Employee Satate Insurance. Please read thread properly and then jump. So once again I am posting it.

I find following formula on net to find ESI. But I don't understand How to use it?
I am a student of MBA(HR) 3-year evening programme and doing project on "Employee Satisfaction" for that I want to use this. Suggest If u have any other formula. I am using 5 scale format for questionnaire as per step 1.
1. How to calculate ESI?
a.There is a five-point scale in the questionnaire or survey from employee responses.
·Strongly Agree
·Agree
·Undecided
· Disagree
· Strongly Disagree.
b. You should remark number attached, include strongly agree (5) to strongly disagree (1).
c. The TOTAL SCORE RECEIVED is calculated = (total number of responses of 5 * 5)+(total number of responses of 4 * 4)+(total number of responses of 3 * 3)+(total number of responses of 2 * 2)+(total number of responses of 1 * 1)
Then, total number of questions with answers against each response is calculated (5, 4, 3, 2, and 1).
d. The total number of questions answered is calculated.
e. Calculate the MAXIMUM TOTAL SCORE which is the TOTAL (pt. d) * 5.
ESI = (TOTAL SCORE RECEIVED / MAXIMUM TOTAL SCORE) * 100
If anybody understand then explain it with example.

Is there any other formula for ESI calculation. I am attaching Qs herewith.

Mahesh

Hi Mahesh,

Here is an example based on your explanation. However, your questionnaire is missing the key overall satisfaction question which is usually used to calculate the ESI:

Example 1: On a scale of 1 (highest) to 5 (lowest), what is your overall job satisfaction in ABC Company?

Example 2: Overall, I am satisfied with ABC Company as the place to work.

Dear Autumn,

Thank you for your reply. Now, I understand how to calculate because in steps I was confused with Total Score and Maximum total score. As per your suggestion, I will add questions related to overall satisfaction.

How do we analyze data after the calculation of ESI? Can we compare Total Respondents with Department Respondents? Can we use a chi-square test? If so, what are the Observed value and Expected value?

I am very thankful to you.

Mahesh

Dear Mahesh,

I have attached more analysis samples for your reference and should answer your other questions. While the chi-square test may be used, it is not common. Specific criteria must be met in order to conduct a chi-square test, which include quantitative data, adequate sample size, etc.

Dear Mahesh,

The first step to follow when raising a query is to search the web. I know that it is easier to post a query at CiteHr, as people are willing to help. A quick check of the web using Google would have led you to How to Use the Likert Scale in Statistical Analysis on eHow.com, found at Google where more links can be found. I am sure that I posted this or similar info at CiteHr. Have a nice weekend.

Dear Autumn,

Thanks for your suggestions and samples. These samples give me direction to make a report. The OCS SAMPLES REPORT.PDF file contains unrecognized characters, making it unreadable. If possible, please send the same file to maheshantra@gmail.com.

Dear Sir,

My name is Pratik Sarwadnya. I also want to calculate ESI, but I cannot understand how to calculate it. Specifically, I cannot understand the formula: (total number of responses of 5 * 5) + (total number of responses of 4 * 4) + (total number of responses of 3 * 3) + (total number of responses of 2 * 2) + (total number of responses of 1 * 1). What does the star mark indicate? Is it for multiplication?

Another query I have is regarding "TOTAL (pt. d) * 5." Could you please explain what "pt. d" refers to?

Dear Pratik,

Please download the Excel table attached by Autumn Jane. I am sure the table clearly explains what is done. You are correct, the asterisk sign in 5*5 represents multiplication. By clicking on different cells in the table, it will show you what has been done.

Dear PARI.NERURKAR,

Please explain to me the Excel sheet calculation attached here. I didn't understand the numbers mentioned corresponding to each question. Usually, employees will tick on the appropriate columns to show their satisfaction level. For example, for the first question, if they strongly agree, then they will tick on the 1st column, and the points should be four. However, in the first column, it is mentioned as 1. What is the rating for that particular question?
