OMG, I cannot believe this is getting so many responses, yet when it comes to "Real" HR topics, silence is golden.
Anyway, since I am here I might as well add my two cents.
Why bother to find out what he wants. Just go out and buy him something he can complaint! And this time, since he is your boss, tell him how the game is played and don't be such an a..e. If he does not like the gift, he can do whatever he wants with it, including dumping into the trash-bin. Whatever, just don't complaint. If he still feels complaints, give him the option of not participating leave !.
If you really want to help, coach him out of his hole!.

My Suggestion. Get a nice and good old book related to his carrier. It’s better to search in old book shops. See the results. Simple gift, but ever lasts by always being with him. Good luck.

Hi Nel
We also celebrate our boss’s B’day in d office.
I do not recommend giving cloths, ties etc. becs if he wears only a certain brand he will not happy with a different one.
Why not try giving him a full basket of fruits or flowers??????
Good luck

Thank you all guys,
I bought him a very nice tissue box and a electronic card holder. He can put the tissue box on the desk in his office and store his tissues inside, as for the card holder, keep all his cards in it. I hope he will like it.
Once again, thank you all, i really appreciate your advises.
