Hi,
I would like to know the following about OD:
1. What educational qualifications and work experiences should one have to get into OD? Does having a background in behavioral training help in making a career in OD?
2. What are trends and the areas of focus (in India)?
3. Is there any OD theory that has been created/used specifically for Asian countries?
4. Which organizations in India use assessment centers and have a fairly strong organizational development function (as a separate department or as a part of some other department)?
5. Which institutes in India teach OD (not just as a part of Industrial/Organizational/Applied Psychology)? I know only about the Centre of Organizational Development (Hyderabad).
Thanks

Dear Somapal,
1. Educational Qualifications - People from quality backgrounds are engaging in OD activities within organizations to enhance process areas. Therefore, educational qualifications are not mandatory.
2. The trends clearly indicate that there will be a significant demand for OD professionals in the upcoming years.
3. Not only in Asia, but also within organizations, there are unique OD interventions being utilized, though the theoretical aspect is not entirely clear.
4. There are numerous organizations that utilize Assessment Centers (AC). To name a few that I have come across - NTPC, Aricent, Dell.
5. Master of Human Resource and Organizational Development (MHROD) offered by the Faculty of Commerce and Business at Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University, provides specialization in OD.

Hi Soma,
A formal background in management would definitely help a lot in getting into OD - though it's practically not mandatory, most organizations perceive it that way. Considerable expertise in behavioral training would definitely make it easier to comprehend the needs and be able to articulate the interventions better.
The current trend, which has been observed over the last 3 years, is slowly shifting towards including Behavioral Assessments as part of OD interventions, particularly with a consulting approach and a focus on Counseling, Coaching, and Mentoring. Tools like DISC, MBTI, 16PF, etc., are gaining more acceptance and are widely used in many industries such as IT, BPO, manufacturing, retail, and airlines.
There are many OD theories in existence, though you can't say that a particular one is the most valid or widely used - the field itself is yet to reach the level of maturity seen in other countries.
Many companies in India in the IT, BPO, Manufacturing, and Retail sectors have implemented Assessment centers; even some companies in the healthcare industry have joined in - I have refrained from naming the companies, for obvious reasons.
There are numerous Management Development Programs (MDPs) offered by IIMs and other premium business schools in the country specifically related to OD as a separate discipline. Otherwise, most university programs would incorporate OD as just a part of the full program - perhaps as a single paper required for the degree.
My personal opinion is that rather than a program or course that teaches OD, it is the practical exposure and experience gained through various training and development initiatives that truly shape one into a genuine OD consultant.
