One of my employees handed over his resignation because he did not get a promotion. He has mentioned it in the letter. But he is really hard worker & asset for the company. But his immediate boss is not willing to promote him at this moment. What can we do in this type of situation?

Hi,
It depends on the what method are you following for promotions and appraisals. There are many methods available in the market and probebly you are only following the peer review basis for appraisals. This may be one of the reason that true talent is not been able to get highlighted while appraisals. HR is supposed to be the bridge during the employee and HOD in this kind of situations. If employee is such a hard working and asset for the company then you may take a firm decision and after consultation with senior to his HOD you may proceed for his promotion if HOD is not ready to accept the same. But, please insure that you should have proper documentation and backup to prove your stand.

HI
Mr.Rk, You mentioned your colleague as hard worker but not mentioned either about your org policy in promotions ( yardstick) nor your colleague age of service
Some times though hard worker , the policy of co might be against
some times though hard worker the top position might required smart work rather than hard work
So that all will be calculated by PMS team of HR , from adding the inputs of the division heads
hence that may hit the chances of promotion though employee loyalty remains high
cut above the rest is , some dirty politics too cant be ruled out
what happen in your colleague case can be address after only the inputs mentioned supra (a above )
unless so information provided can't conclude the mistake of his immediate boss
example : A purchase dept. has team of 5 ( executive role ) and manager operations want one amongst 5 to be promoted as asst. manager one of them has 4 years exp and others have 2.5yrs to 3 years
Then whom the ops manager has to give promotion
1) loyalty
2) Tenure of service
3) hard working
4) loyalty with smart working added with diplomacy
Since it is a purchase department always require diplomacy in vendor relation regarding timely purchase t
with best price and prompt supply and follow ups / alternative search for vendors / market analysts
etc..
We need to search who has that capacity and not the tenure or hard work alone
any way the causes are different from another to another
so analyse whether a genuine reason or a foul play and then take a step
if genuine increase the quality that requires according to the policy and need of the company
and no one can stop the promotion , and even if so, the worth employee will never loose a chance
indeed the org need to face crisis for so.
