I completely agree with this post. Being flatterer here doesn't mean that you don't have to work and cajole your boss all the time. It means you have to play smartly. There are thousand people who work hard and pay result but still not being recognized for their work. How you would be different? How someone can choose you for promotion among hundred employees? Bosses would chose you if you stand out among your colleagues and it doesn't include mere hard work. It includes your personal configuration with you boss, your behavior, the way you appreciate your boss for his work and leading qualities etc. Of course, if someone appreciates his intelligent boss in excess that's quite blatant to him that his subordinate trying to caux him. There is a thin line between flattering and appreciating someone, so it depends how do we play.

Dear Narayan:
Bosses are sharp guys and they usually 'know' even before you can 'trick' them what's up your sleeve and 'on you mind.' Once or twice they may be 'fooled' around; but remember - a job is a job, and business is business. To stand out you have to be one up with an outstanding performance - helping yourself thus to 'stand tall' - then there will remain no need of flattering your boss.
Play it cool and go by the rules.
