All respected seniors,
I am 35+ year lady having 15 yrs. experience in Administration in Secretarial functions, working in Pune. I was interested in HR hence did part time Master of Personnel Mgt. in 1st class. Currently handling Exe.Asstt. plus recruitments for company. I am passionate about HR and wants to leave Admin. & shape up my further carrer as HR generalist. But everyone wants experienced people. Would you advise continuing in secretarial functions ? With good communication, I am strong in recruitment, but present job does't offer wider scope in HR.
Can anyone guide me the right course of action ?

Dear Vaishalee
Please post your resume/CV in Naukri or Monster website with your current responsibility, CTC and expected CTC
You will get plenty of openings
Nowadays, according to my view, how you are performing in interview only counts, not your experience or knowledge.
Wish you all the best
With warm regards

Thanks for the replies. I have assisted in PA, Trg., but not handled payroll. A short training will be useful to take a grip.
Also my CV is on job portals, but may be due to Admin background calls are minimal. Can anyone suggest me a short term training for 4-5 days or so to get knowledge and practical experience on HR functions incl. statutory compliance ?

You can request your vendors/suppliers to impart you free of salary training in payroll, PF,ESI,PT computation and depositing in bank and the maintenance of relevent records. You can even do this on your weekly off days. There are lot of generous and helpful people and anybody will always come forward to help you. I will try with my HR counterpart at Pune, in this matter but it will take atleast 10 days as I am presentlybusy in an important assignment. In the meantime you may revert as to which area of Pune will be comfortable for you to undergo this short term training.

Hi,
It's a good initiative you have taken to step forward. As you indicated every employer required experience professional for HR Generalist roles.
In usual terms, recruitment is the stepping stone to go ahead, explore & enjoy the various HR activities. I would suggest, keep your current profile moving and try getting experience in other HR functions in your current organization.
Once you get a clarity on the job, facts & other details it would help you to project your experience as required for a Generalsit role.
Best wishes,
Karthik

Dear Vaisalee,
The decision what you have taken is very good. In secretarial function, you will go upto a certain level. After that there will not be any scope. Example, You will become Secretary - CEO of a good MNC, but in HR based on your experience, there will be lot of scope for your growth & development.

Hello Vaishalee,
I appreciate Sunil Sadar's offer to assist you--one of the primary reasons why this Forum continues to grow more popular everyday. Suggest take his help without a second thought.
Coming to your situation, suggest redo your resume where you put the focus more on the HR aspects & less on the Secretarial functions. Usually the skills accumulated in such a function can easily aid you in Administrative functions/roles directly. And the people-handling skills that you would surely have gained in the secretarial role--especially with senior level people--will help you handle the HR function more easily & better than someone who has been in the HR function all thru.

Dear Vaishalee Parkhi,
You have landed in the right forum. Kindly go through the threads raised by members everyday (it almost runs to over 20 pages) and under each thread you will find answers/ views/ suggestions/ ideas/ responses by other members. You will also find informative material on this website. I would recommend that you spend atleast 1 hour each day and I am sure that you will cover lot of ground in a span of 1 month.
We are all there.

Dear Vishalee
I would like to give you a different suggestion , As you said that you have master degree in personnel management and have good experience in Administration. I think, you will be well aware about the core functions of Human Resource Department. You are working in Administration department and Human Resource Department is a part of Admin Department in many organization or both departments are working together (H.R & Admin Deptt) in many organizations.
I want to say that you will have to add some H.R. responsibilities in your resume otherwise you will remain in problem for getting good opportunity in H.R. As you said that you are good communicator , good presenter so you can handle and manage yourself at the time of interview.
I think . you will have to do this for getting good opportunity. otherwise companies will not call you for interview.
My best wishes are with you.

Indeed I am delighted to have your replies and feel happy to join this forum which I did just 4 days back.
Mr. Sunil – Your suggestion is valid and I appreciate your help in this regard. I stay in Pimpri-Chinchwad area and can have training on salary and statutory compliances on weekly off. My contact is 9422311441 also if possible give me your email or contact number.
To other seniors – In my current job, I already expressed my desire to handle other HR functions but mgt. does not want to spend on recruiting other person for Admin then and take me in full fledge HR. Moreover, career planning activities doesn’t exist here so I can not keep any hopes. Also have highlighted HR work on CV in job portals, but don’t get interview calls may be becoz of secretarial background or due to my over-experience.
On second thought, I would even work with recruitment consultancy but they also must be thinking about my stability there which is but natural on their part.
I just need a break in HR and I am confident I can take a grip. Even I like employee relation mgt. so I am absolutely open for any branch of HR.
It goes without saying you have made my day by backing my decision. Look forward for continued support from you all.
Wish you a very happy and prosperous new year 2011.
Thanks again & regards,
Vaishalee
