Hi All, I have a query regarding my salary. Since I am posting for the first time so not sure if this is the correct thread but if not, would request the moderator to move me or guide me to the right one. So here it goes.

I have a total industry experience of more than 8 years but have a very low salary compared to my peers. Now the problem is if I go for a new job interview and ask for a 30-40% hike, I still stay below par from the current industry trend. I should be getting a package of Rs 8 to 9 lac (as being eligible for an assistant manager role) but due to some uncontrollable situations in the past, I am now drawing a salary of Rs 5 lac. So you see what I am referring to.

Now I want to understand as to how can I get to a salary of 8 lac if not 9 lac in my next interview. Can I tell the HR that since I am on a low package I need more hike and would they consider my point and is that the correct approach, and if not what are some ways I can negotiate so that I can be at par with the market? I don't really want to fake my salary and live with the fear of being caught.

Any and all suggestions would be highly appreciated. I look forward to a prompt response.

Thanks in advance.

hi,you haven't mentioned which industry you worked on,but let me explain having 8 yrs of experience is good enough to be a asst manager having lot of exposure on the market. So just open your dynamic skills in front of your new interview (HR) prove yourself you are the assets to the company then you will definitely pay you.Just ask your expectation in preliminary interview if they obey they reach you then everything is well placed.hope you can able to reach what you want
all the best

dear colleague,

From your narrations, it is felt that your company and team members are more amenable and there is environment for sharing and performing also .The company must be reviewing salary and promotions time to time and finally annual increments during this time. You take an appointment from your immediate reviewer and in that scheduled meeting , discuss your issues one to one asking him to guide you as to how you are expected to perform for better career growth , promotions and long term career as well.which can be remunerative and finally you start getting recognized, a method for you.. You may be advised to improve upon your functional requirements, like others you to acquire few new soft skills sets requirements , like preparations of check list, decision making, communications and presentations, planning and execution and team collaborations etc.If he is not ready that minute, give him a brief and request for another meetins so that you get him responsibly involved in this for you like a dependable support .His guidance and mentoring only will pave way for your career plan and promotions in this type of one to one meetings. Lastly, at end of discussions, ask him very politely to render you support and hand holding into functions and newer assignments so that you become independent in soonest possible time. You will be taken care of and certainly your problems start getting resolved gradually in lesser than expected time here at the same department, that much faith and confidence you should also develop within.

All the best,

Thank you all for your valuable inputs. I work in a private sector professional services firm and the peers i am comparing with have may be less/same experience or exposure than me. But the only difference is that they are managers favorites. I ahve tried changing companies but the only problem is i cant really ask for a package of 8 lacs as i feel awkward i want to know, how can i best ask for a package of 8 lac. Also can you give me some websites which can help me derive the packages of the profile i will be probably trying for.
