i m working in a company as a HR. I have been taking care of all HR related activities and Administration. Mainly i have been concentrating on employee related issues. Here my management wants me to mingle with all the employees and find out their attitude towards the management. I have been also told that i have act like a spy to the manager. Is it like, i have to inform all the employees personal thoughts with the management. Once one employee came to me and discussing that he might resign the job in coming month. he is informing me that, he is telling me personally not formally. What do i do. do i need to inform this to management. do i need to support the employees or management.

Hi,

Kindly note the following,

a) the above situation is not un common. Especially if the organization is prone to many IR problems or if the attrition rates are high then these kind of sensing is more required.( even other wise it is required but the intensity may vary)

b) This sensing need not necessarily be a spying activity. Being in HR it is imeprative that the pulse of the organization is sensed from time to time and any adverse indication that may affect the health of the organization need to be analysed and alerted. It may be related to the mood/Morale of the emloyees/ any specific reaction to a newly implemented people policy or a pay hike.

c) This process of mingling with employees is also a strong stepping stone to build the trust of employees on HR.

HR professional is also required to know what needs to be heard, how much to be filtered and what need to be communicated to the senior managment about the such sensings. You may specifically share the information along with your readings/ comments if any on the same.

Kind reagrds

hi suganthi,
Its basically all about how you make a balance b/w management & employees. Thats wt HR's r meant for.
When we talk abt an organization, we care about professional attitude which you have to maintain to a greater extent. Try n retain that particular employee if u hv knowledge in advance abt his resignation. Ask abt his/her probs what he/she is facing and accordingly u may take a decision.

Dear look try once wt management is thinking, don't think that u belongs to employee only. U R paid by employer for your job . it may be possible that managment is thinking to take some positive action. U just try once. and don't ever think that management is going to believe what ever your say.

Hi Suganthi,
As far as loyalty factor is concerned, first, you should be loyal to the company, you are working for, as far as the professional sphere goes. However, this does not mean that, even though the management is wrong or doing something that is not accepted by your conscience or intellect, you have to take a call on your own. I fully agree with the other replies that as far as the other employees sharing things with you, you need to poke at the factors which have prompted him to think about quitting.

Hi Colleagues,
Mingling, .............I would like to use the word here INTERACTION. To maintain the conducive environment and good culture, the HR personnel should be more interactive and approachable to the employees. SPY is not a professioal word to be used in the business world.
We interact with the employees to know their pulse, for grievances, suggestions or or to communicate the company policies. If we listen anything from the employees and feed everything to the management, it is not a good practice.
Why Management wants to have HR person be more interactive ? Because to maintain harmonious relations among the employees/ between employees and management and to receive improvement ideas. So
be sincere, open, interactive and diplomatic to excell in the HR field.

Adopt a professional approach. Give your management an alternative . For example, suggest you conduct an employee engagement survey to know what employees think of the management and the company and then suggest corrective measures. This approach will not only help you to get management appreciation and also credibility among the employees.Best of luck!

Madam,
A H.R should be a bridge between employer and employee. he have to be patience and also to be a medicine for the misserries and problems of every employees. he have to passout the messages of what are the requirements an employee need for productivity. he can take necessarry negative actions against an employee if he is not reliablie for the company and if he is a culprit.
