The basic formula for the calculation of Attrition is as follows:

(No. of employees attrited in the year) / (Average headcount for the year);

Where the average headcount for the year is calculated as:

(Average headcount for the year) = (opening headcount + closing headcount) / 2.

When calculating attrition for a specific month, it is important to consider the relevant figures (e.g., the number of attrites, average headcount, etc.) for that month.

However, many organizations nowadays manipulate these numbers to project lower attrition figures. Some common practices include:

1. If the closing headcount > average headcount, then the closing headcount is taken as the denominator.
2. Employees who attrite in the first 6 months are often excluded when calculating the number of attrites.

Hope this information is helpful!
