Dear Gurus,

Is there any IR policy? If you have any, could you please send it to ? Also, please specify the difference between an IR Manager and an HR Manager. Please reply.

Hi Mr. Shukla,

I understand what you want to know. In my opinion, both profiles are completely different on practical grounds and require different maturity and ways to handle things.

A good example of IR managers are Labour Officers and Labour Commissioners attached to public sector and Central Government establishments. You can find them in almost every establishment as it is required by labor laws.

Dear All,

I have already worked in some companies in the Personnel & Administration Department, where we went through all the Acts, e.g., ID Act, Trade Union Act, Standing Orders, PF, ESI, Payment of Wages Act, etc. I have also conducted domestic inquiries in some cases where the workmen were suspended for misconduct. I understand that all these terms will be covered in Industrial Relations (IR). However, the interview I am preparing for is specifically for Deputy Manager - IR, and the HR department is entirely separate. I am curious about what my role will entail if I am selected. While I have experience in areas like Training and Development, Appraisal, Payroll, MIS, Disciplinary Action, and Grievance redressal, I will be focusing on Core IR in this role. I would greatly appreciate your advice. If there are any policies or functions related to this role, please forward them to me at narsingh_shukla@yahoo.com.

Best Regards,

Hi Mr. Shukla,

In the HR fraternity, it is generally observed that HR and IR are used as separate terms. But in my opinion, HR is a holistic term where IR can be a part of it. Basically, HR deals with relations, performance, engagement, employee satisfaction, transformations, HR strategies, talent management, L&D, OD, and so on. IR refers to harmonious industrial relations with respect to employees and employers, which is a core area of HR.

IR is generally referred to in a unionized environment of working dealing with the Trade Union Act, ID Act, standing orders, and other related areas in and around these statutes, apart from other labor statutes. Expectations from an IR manager include maintaining a balanced relationship with unions, addressing their grievances, implementing welfare measures, negotiating long-term settlements, handling strikes, lockouts, layoffs, disciplinary procedures, and so on.
