Dear SSM,

Fire Drill:
A fire drill is a method of practicing the evacuation of a building for a fire or other emergency. Generally, the emergency system (usually an alarm) is activated, and the building is evacuated as though a real fire had occurred. Usually, the time it takes to evacuate is measured to ensure that it occurs within a reasonable length of time.

Mock Drill:
A mock drill makes it clear that it is just practice and there is no real fire.

Mr. SSM, please refer to the link attached below. We have already discussed this topic extensively.

Dear SSM,

Fire Drill:
A fire drill is a method of practicing the evacuation of a building for a fire or other emergency. Usually, the time it takes to evacuate is measured to ensure that it occurs within a reasonable length of time.

Mock Drill:
The approach for conducting a mock drill varies as per the complexity of the scenario depending upon the potential hazards, response system of the industry, and the target community. Therefore, to ensure the proper implementation of a drill program, roles and responsibilities (SOPs) of the concerned personnel, departments, and mechanisms for conducting the drill should be delineated clearly.

Dear Team,

Good discussion so far.

Let me share my thoughts regarding the subject:

I believe that in a fire drill, it is specifically carried out by the firefighters, involving mainly them. In a mock drill, all employees participate and learn how to deal in case of an emergency.

Please correct me if I have made any incorrect comments.

Dear SSM,

i add few points about your query,

Most employees only think of fire drills as annoying interruptions that take time away from the work they have to accomplish that day. But in the event of a real emergency, proper preparation can be the difference between a near-miss and a tragedy.
A well-run fire drill should accomplish several goals. In addition to making sure you've identified all hazards at your facility and employees know how to exit the building safely and efficiently.
And the specific things you want to accomplish will determine what kind of drill to conduct.

Unannounced drills
Unannounced fire drills are a good way to test workers ability to react to a hazardous situation they weren't expecting. Conduct unannounced drills to:
  • Make sure all workers can hear the alarms
  • Discover if employees know the best exit routes to take
  • determine whether employees with special roles in the case of an emergency know what steps to take
  • Find out how long it takes to get everyone out of the building, and
  • Test employees' reactions when they aren't sure if it's a real hazard or not.
Announced drills
When workers are expecting a fire drill, they may not take the exercise as seriously. But announced fire drills still have benefits. Hold planned drills in order to:
  • Make sure workers have read and understand new evacuation procedures you've provided
  • Test how employees react to a more specific hazard (like a predetermined blocked exit route), and
  • Determine workers' ability to locate and operate fire extinguishers.
Dear dipil,

Your propably right, for more info please read above .

Dear Raghu,

Thank you for your reply.

My thought is that a mock drill is conducted for all emergency situations that may arise in a plant. Fire can be one of these emergencies. Therefore, there isn't much difference between them as the aim is the same. We need to educate the workers to prepare them to deal with emergencies, regardless of what name we give the drill.

Thank you.

Dear Dipil,

I think so, maybe you're right!!!

Bullet points:
- Mock drill: It includes all emergencies, i.e., flood, hazmat, accident, etc.
- Fire drill: It's only for fire. Once a fire starts, we receive signals by fire alarm, smoke, etc. In a mock drill, there are no options; we can't get any details about what exactly happened, but we know something happened, whether it's an accident or a chemical spill. In a fire drill, we know exactly that a fire happened.

I hope this helps.

Dear friends,

Extremely sorry to interrupt in between your discussion.

Emergency Mock Drill - to practice an event to create more awareness among all employees on how to react or escape in case of emergency situations such as fire, medical emergencies, natural disasters, collapsing scaffolding, public threats, terror attacks, etc.

A mock drill aims to increase awareness of handling a situation by conducting a drill.

A fire drill is also a type of mock drill that instructs employees on how to handle a fire emergency. (The procedure includes how to react or escape from a fire incident if a fire occurs)

Dear All,

A very good discussion and valuable inputs from all.

Fire Drill:

A fire drill is a refresher training for the in-house firefighting team members. It may be extended to other personnel to create awareness of the usage of first aid firefighting equipment.

As per A.P. Factories Rules 1950, firefighting drills shall be held as often as necessary and at least once every 2 months.

Mock Drill:

A mock drill is a rehearsal of the scenarios identified as per the site's on-site Emergency Plan. The scenario of a mock drill may vary from drill to drill. The drills should be conducted as both informed and surprise types. The list includes some of the scenarios:

i) Fire Incident at ____________

ii) Toxic Gas release at _________________

iii) Flammable/Corrosive/Toxic chemical spillage at ______________

iv) Natural calamities like Flood, Cyclone, etc.

v) Terrorist attacks

vi) Food Poisoning

vii) Medical Emergencies like Heart attack, Snake-bite, etc.

1. As per MSIHC Rules 1989, the occupier shall ensure that a mock drill of the on-site emergency plan is conducted every six months.

2. As per Schedule XV of A.P. Factories Rules 1950, all emergency procedures must be rehearsed every three months, and deficiencies, if any, in the achievement of the objectives shall be suitably corrected.

Can someone give me a reference regarding who conducts fire drills and how to get in touch with them for the same? My Head of HR is considering implementing fire drills and has asked me to do research on the subject. I would appreciate your help with this matter.
