Overcoming Negative Thinking

When you are angry, worried, or afraid, your blood pressure and heart rate may increase dramatically, and your activities are more likely to go into spasm, causing your platelets to clump together and clog up your blood vessels, says Dr. Dean Ornish.

The more you concentrate on your fear or worry, the more harm you do to your body. Maintaining a negative mental attitude has always been known to produce negative physical conditions. We know that people who maintain a positive mental attitude rarely get sick.

Negative thinking causes problems, while positive thinking provides solutions. Negative thinking creates a climate in which health problems can develop, whereas positive thinking creates a climate in which good health can be attained and maintained. Negative thinking involves worry, insecurity, fear, suspicion, hatred, antagonisms, anger, despair, mourning, self-doubt, etc.

While positive thinking spreads love, appreciation, optimism, security, courage, cooperation, compassion, generosity, friendliness, patience, helpfulness, and ambition, negative thinking puts you out of step with people and things around you. Positive thinking, on the other hand, keeps you in harmony with people and things in your environment. Negative thinking can become habitual, and the stress it causes can become chronic, which is detrimental to health. Chronic stress is a killer. Holding negative attitudes for prolonged periods leads to chemical changes in the body.

A stress chemical is released into the blood, inhibiting the immune system's work by confusing and overstimulating the system. In such circumstances, health problems begin to accumulate. However, having positive feelings about yourself and the work you do leads you to be optimistic rather than pessimistic, contributing to your health. This optimistic outlook is better for your health and, ultimately, your survival. Doing right promotes your health, while doing wrong compromises it. Life may not always be entirely within our control, but our minds are, or should be, under our control.
