Dear HR IR Professionals,
What is a Canteen Facility Under the Factories Act? What is Applicability?
MEAL/ FOOD is mandatory to be provided by Employer?
Pl. Suggest or guide on the legal matter.

A canteen is a statutory necessity where the total workman (i.e., all-inclusive at the workplace) exceeds 250. The details on how the canteen is to be run statutorily is in the Factories Act Rules promulgated by the State Government.
The items to be provided in the canteen is not prescribed in the statute, but is left to the Canteen Managing Committee and it can also decide on the pricing of the items. The guideline is that it should be on no profit-no loss basis on the running expenses (capital cost is excluded)
