Unfortunately it is these issues that create problem in the work atmosphere.
Ravi - imagine your lady boss proposing you (I wish her dead!) Wont you feel irritated (or the other way round) to work with her?
Imagine you and your colleague are together working on an HR issue (since you claim that you are in HR .. :-) ) - if your colleague comes late everyday, and because of this you have to show some work output/... wont you get frustrated?
Imagine - your employer is asking you to cut costs on coffee and is NOT willing to listen to your story of employee motivation through a cup of coffee... what will you do?
Well - you are a genius, you have people at your call or even resources to refer..but poor people like us use citehr, spare us. Please continue with your work (if you have any)

Hi Uma,
Drafting policy on coffee consumption is too much and also it is not professional way. our friends gave few suggestions i think its work out. Better you just send a common mail to all employees regading coffee issure or Unlock the coffee machine only particular time then give restriction to coffee boy not a employee try the above things surely it will work.
And Mr.Ravi coffee issue is also a hr issure so if possible give your suggestion otherwise leave the topic.

hey.. this is philanderous...coffee or no coffee ..i sure u must be thinking about hw to talk to them about the benifits of switching ovre to healthier alternatives like butter milk, lime juice rather than just pull the rug from under their feet....
u take off one benifit.. substitute with anothet HEALTHY alternative
Your approach should make the HEALTHY choice more wanting rather than making a policy on coffee usage and get employees more frustrated than they already are due to other factors that u cannot guage..
please keep in mind the relationship that will sour if a move is wrong even though the intentions are RIGHT

Hope you will be fine, ample people have given their golden words.
I just want to say.......you should introduce a health care sessions in your office by a doctor, you can get a appointment from Doc and asked him to present disadvantages of excessive use of coffe, this should be help you out to cut the company cost and also get the beneficial for you to take these kind of initiative.

Hi Uma,
This is what we do in our office:
We have 2 tea breaks of 10 minutes each and 1 lunch break of 30 minutes. Other than that, the employees are not served anything on their desk by the office peons. This has helped us cut down our expenses on the tea/coffee consumption.

In my opinion its a situation which normally we all say 'PENNY WISE POUND FOOLISH'. Look at the amount of time you have to spend on reviewing the suggestion / opinion on the policy statement that you have requested for on this site. You will be spending time in developing a policy document, getting it reviewed by the management and taking the feedback of employees through their department manager and so on. Finally, you probably will see a good policy document with lot of employee de-motivation for what, just to save millionth fraction of the total cost of the company!
Instead, keep forwarding the health related tickles / small tips as to how excessive intake of caffeine adversely affect human health.

We are in an emotional society. If you cut something this will immediately invoke a negative response. Hence try buying small cups. This will automatically reduce your cost. You may also be able to reason this towards health awareness or so. Arrange for a health consultant to visit and talk about health, etc in the cafetaria during lunch and do this in a planned manner. Best of luck

DRINKING three cups of coffee a day cuts your diabetes risk by 25%, finds a study. Drinking four cups of tea, apparently, also has the same effect. The sensible thing, then, of course is to drink four cups of tea and three cups of coffee: you cut your diabetes risk by 50%. Of course, to drink such quantities of these bitter beverages, you would need to add some milk and a little, just a teeny little, bit of sugar to each cup. If doubts over all those cumulative calories begin to niggle, there’s another study to reassure you — a cup of coffee packs as many antioxidants as one orange.
But then, no harm in popping an orange as well, just in case. Now, one principal function of vitamin C, which just sloshes around inside an orange, is to help the body absorb iron. If you already have taken the trouble to ingest a lot of vitamin C, you might as well get hold of some dietary iron as well. That means red meat, or well, at least spinach or beetroot. As a compromise, you pack the lot into a sandwich, choosing brown bread, for the fibre. If you’re making such huge concessions to health already, you’re probably justified in slathering on a blob of butter to that coarse bread and layering it with perhaps a thin slice of cheese — you know these things are good for you, after all, people have been eating them for ages. Now if you feel a pang of guilt over the fat in the meal, the logical thing to do is to consume something that will break the fat down. Red wine, a study has found, lowers your risk of getting a heart attack. So that’s a safe choice. Another study has found that whisky has a similar function. Set theory will tell you that if either study has got it wrong, but not both, the only way to ensure you have the right solution is to create an overlap between the two. A glass of this, a glass of that, a bough, a book and you — all in the cause of fighting diabetes. Raise a toast to those studies, never mind if some of them are sponsored by the manufacturers of the foods whose virtues they extol!

In certain threads; queries have been raised as to "why HR is a thankless job" and "why HR are most hated in an organization".
The ANSWER, I think has been presented beautifully in this thread.
So many HR talents, busy in discussion for DRAFTING a POLICY for EXCESSIVE COFFEE CONSUMPTION... (actual Drafting will, hopefully, take place later, maybe after 20-30 pages of posts and discussions).
POLICIES for this and that... for everything an employee is supposed to do or not to do. I guess, even toddlers are not put under such DISCIPLINE.
No wonder, one can understand how employees feel about HR.
Hope the posters to the following threads, get some food for thought.
