Hello Friends,

Well I am writing this mail as I want to share my experience about details and scope of SHRM PHR/SPHR exam in India. I am a HR generalist with around 3.5 years experience. I have recently cleared the PHR exam :) which I took in June'09.

Who should go for SHRM certification?
If you are working in US to or plan to move to US or your company (in India) has made it mandatory, you can go for it. The reason I am saying this is as the course content is purely based on US Federal laws and related stuff. So if you are in India it might not be of much use to you.

What Course material can you use?
I have no US experience and studied 'PHR/SPHR: Professional in Human Resources Certification Study Guide' by Anne Bogardus. And also used certgear's practice tests. In addition to this tried various online tests which are free. Apart from this didn't use any other course material, so if you know every word of Anne Bogardus's book, you really don't require to shell out hundreds of dollars on HRCI study material.

Plus PHR/SPHR certification is valid for 3 years which means you need to recertify every 3 years.

Last but not the least, do your research before you go ahead for this certification. All related info is available at www.hrci.org

I hope my experience will be of help to many.

Good Luck

Cheers!!!

From my knowledge and expereince I can only say that only Society for Human Resources Management is Institution who is accredited to issue certification to become eligible as Certified Professional in Human Resources to practice HR in US or Canada.
Rest of Institutes are not knon whether valid?
What is HRCI?
You discuss of SHRM and offer link to HRCI is confusing to us? because you are mixing both Institutes as one. But they are different.

Hi

You are right. HRCI and SHRM are two different institutes but there is more to it.

The PHR/SPHR certification is awarded by the HR Certification Institute which is the credentialing body for human resource professionals and is affiliated with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), USA the world's largest organization dedicated exclusively to the human resource profession.

Hope it clarifies your doubt.

Dear Shivani,
Why you discuss of HRCI when SHRM has its office in India. Instead of HRCI why do not you advise for joining SHRM which is parent organization as you states of HRCI.
According to me we have to register ourself to SHRM to practice HR in USA. Only SHRM is accredited agency for such certification.

Dear Shivani,
I think we both should congratulate each other as even I got PHR certified by Jun'09.
It was a wonderful course I did my exams through prometric in Qatar.
It really adds value to your CV and to your career.
Yes as you say it has to be recertified but dont you think it has higher certifications like SPHR and GPHR, which can surely take you to great heights. You can always join a MNC in India who is based out in USA and act as a International/Global HR Manager.
Im sure it will benefit all, but guys you need to practice a lot before you take exams as you will have 225 questions and 4 hours to complete it online no negative marks.
Thanks

Hey Shahed,
Congratulations! to you too. I hope you and Shivani both respond to my request for help in preparing for PHR / SPHR. I know the value that a certification from SHRM or CIPD holds in the rest of the world. I was based in the UAE and recently relocated to India and really want to pursue a certification from SHRM.
If both, Shivani and yourself, can share with me the details about the sites you visited to get the free online tests it would be really helpful.
My email id is . Request you both to kindly add me as a contact.
Kind regards,
Charmaine
