Here's an article from Citeman Management Articles http://citeman.com <link updated to site home>

A set of data woven together becomes information. When information is meaningfully applied, it stands apart as knowledge. Every tool remains unserved until a talented hand picks it up and uses it to create a work of art. This co-creation of value from information and means by humans creates knowledge. Aristotle explained in epistemology the structure for knowledge. He described the five different levels as Epistémé or factual, Téchné or skill-based action-oriented, Phrónésis or experiential practical wisdom, Noûs or intuition, and Sophía or theoretical of universal rules. The framework of these levels generates different results from almost the same information.

Info-preneuring and Knowledge-preneuring

Info-preneuring is a process where an individual prepares a database for the benefit of its customer. Knowledge-preneuring is the following step where this information is rightly processed for the benefit of its user and implemented for the best results. For example, if a Real Estate Broker shares the market rate of a house, then he is info-preneuring. But when this broker shares the incremental change in the value of the house for a fixed time period along with comparative gains over other houses in the same price range, then it becomes knowledge. Finally, when the broker helps the buyer decide on a particular loan that will help the buyer gain through the incremental change in the value of the house despite the marginal increase in the interest rate of the loan, then it becomes complete Knowledge-preneuring.

Application in HR Management

Similarly, for an HR Manager, when a concern is shared from a Business Unit, the HR Manager identifies the pattern in the situation. A solution is then offered after in-depth research, including discussions with experts, reading research papers, and relevant books. It becomes Knowledge-preneuring when the HR Manager works as a think tank to the Business Unit heads and helps them implement the solutions. It's similar to offering a tool and sharing when not to use it, bridging the gap between theory and model.

Finally, the key lies in Aristotle's Knowledge Management, which focuses on how challenges are met in the acquisition, organization, and distribution of knowledge.

The 8 Steps of Knowledge

I believe there are actually 8 steps of knowledge, which I use as my information processing model. They are:

1. **Preparation** - What to pay attention to before any external input happens.
2. **Observation** - Being there, setting up sensors, etc.
3. **Data** - The clicks of the turnstile, the number of customers who walked in.
4. **Information** - The data that is arranged in a meaningful way, like a library catalog.
5. **Knowledge** - Information that is understood. Information becomes knowledge when someone reads it.
6. **Wisdom** - Knowledge that leads to judgment and action. Related to one's past and values held.
7. **Realization** - Wisdom that there are multiple perspectives that could all be equally valid.
8. **Weltanschauung** - A way of looking at the world. An overall perspective that shapes one's opinions and way of life.
