For a while now, the following questions have been dancing around in my mind. I am very interested in knowing your thoughts and opinions:
Working hours
1. What do you think should be the working hours per day/per week/quarter/year in India?
2. How dependent should these be on the job description?
3. Should the working hours vary based on location (metro/city/town, etc.)?
Working days
1. How many paid leaves should be there for employees?
2. Should these paid leaves vary based on the job description?
3. Should these vary based on the job location?

Ans: Q1. Working hours generally in India are 9/8 hours depending on the company you work for. For process, manufacturing, and pharma companies, it's an 8-hour shift that runs on a 24/7 basis. For corporate jobs, the general shift/day shift is 9 hours, with 8 hours dedicated to work and the remaining hour for lunch and tea breaks.
Ans: Q2. Yes, it varies from job to job.
Ans: Q3. Actually, it's 8-9 hours. If you work extra hours, you will get paid for overtime (OT), which is double your salary, subject to an understanding between you and the company management.
Working Days
------------
1. In the corporate world, it's called EL's (Earning Leaves/PL). For every month you work, one paid leave will be given to you.
2. Yes, it varies for contract/full-time employees.
3. Based on the type of job.

Thank you very much for the reply. I was honestly expecting many more replies, as this seems to be a very interesting topic. We regularly implement laws and policies, and in many cases (like the 8-hour working day), know its history of origin. The question is whether they are still relevant today. Has anyone experimented on this with shorter working days, monitoring its effect on productivity? What about paid leaves' uniformity across the layers of the organization? While understanding legal limitations, the curiosity is regarding experimentation, especially since differentiation is important.
