This is Hari. I hold a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, an MBA in Human Resources, and an LLB, with around 6 years of experience in HR and administration. I have over 4 years of experience in the pharma industry and over 2 years in construction. Currently, I am working as a Senior Executive in HR at a pharma company. My profile as a Senior HR in a medical transcription company is about to be finalized. However, I am a little worried about transitioning to that industry as I am not familiar with the conditions there.

I have been asked to sign a 2-year bond. When I spoke to individuals working in medical transcription, they mentioned that there is high attrition in the industry, which concerns me regarding my ability to manage recruitment effectively. If the package is attractive, should I take the opportunity, or will this experience not be valuable for my HR career?

Please provide your suggestions as I am in a dilemma. Alternatively, would it be better for me to pursue a career in SAP in the long run?

I will give you my opinion, but first, I would like you to think about one point. You said that you are not sure if you will be able to manage recruitment in the MT industry since attrition is high, but you will take up the job if the salary is good. My question is: If the company gives you a higher salary, will it suddenly increase your recruitment expertise? Are you thinking of taking up this job because you can deliver the requirements, or do you just want a higher salary and less work?

My recommendation is: don't take up a job just because the salary is higher. Salary does matter, but you should take up a job if you are reasonably sure you will be able to deliver. There is no point in having a high salary and low productivity.

Attrition in the MT Industry

Attrition in the MT industry is a bit high, but I also know a few companies where most employees have stuck around for 3+ years.

Consider the following before finalizing your decision:

1. The MT industry does not require a very high skill set, but is there a sufficient talent pool in the vicinity/city where your company is based for you to backfill attrition?

2. Does the company have long-term stable business visibility? I know from experience that work in the MT industry varies a lot, so there are times when you have to lay off excess staff and sometimes you face a shortage of staff.

3. What kind of competition is the MT company facing? Are there any other companies that are paying a higher salary for the same kind of work? If yes, then attrition will be higher. However, I have noticed that female employees in the MT industry stick around if the workload is reasonable; they don't switch just for money. Guys do.

Career Recommendation

Having given you my opinion about the MT industry, I would recommend that a career in SAP is far more stable and rewarding in the long run. If you have good knowledge of recruitment/payroll/compensation, then you can definitely consider becoming a functional consultant.
