We have a staff in New Delhi. He is required to fly to Hyderabad occasionally. The staff will continue to be receiving his monthly paycheck without interruption. Company will pay for hotel, airtickets, taxi. May I know what is the common practice in India for a daily meal allowance? Is a daily 1000rupees sufficient for a reasonable breakfast/lunch/dinner.

Though it is case of one employee you should have category wise travel policy, it is suggested.
The designation / responsibility of the employee is important to decide the reimbursement limit for food. Rs. 1000 should be OK provided he is not required to dine with others. Quite a few hotels provide complimentary breakfast. The amount should be OK for employee not very senior.

Thank you Shrikant. We provide an equivalent of 2300rp per diem per day. His monthly salary is unaffected. The engineer is claiming that this is highly insufficient. We have only one such staff in India and we do not wish to let him to suffer unnecessary hardship but we have independent survey with other engineers originating from India and one told me that 700rp is sufficient for a day's meals. I wish to hear from the industry experts in India.
