Dear All,
I am new to this forum. So many of us in HR fraternity are experienced people. We have learned nitty gritties of HR after spending considerable time in actual working conditions. I want to know whether name of the institution matters from where one has taken a degree or diploma or the actual experience in the case of a person who does not have MBA from reputed institution but still has got full knowledged based on his or her independent studies and actual working.
My question is whether the name of the institution still matter in the case of experienced person who after working in HR for so long and one fine day decided to go for MBA but due to lots of constraints (may be economical, time and other factors) could not do so from so called good institution and gets it from not so well known institution.
Your view are invited on this matter of great concern for so many of us experienced people but do not have degree from well known institution.

Dear Vijay Shankar

When an institution gets a name and becomes a reputed institution, You must agree that it has reached a position by keeping some standards. Your remark " so called good institution" is not correct.

There are certain admission norms, syllabi, well known professors, industry participation.. all and certain other factors make these institutions good.IIMs XLRI, TISS,IIT,SP Jain MDI and I can name few more.

However, getting qualified is not the only criteria for success. There are failures from these institutions as well. But they get an initial advantage.

In my experience time and economical reasons are not justifiable reasons for any one stating that they could not study in a reputed institute.I know of people who have come from very poor family , managed to study in IIM and IITs Recently, you would have studied about a waiter turned collector from Tamilnadu sheer grit...determination..that is what you need.

To make it short....it matters whether you like it or not.

I am not debating about whether it is right or wrong.

I am just explaining the reality

Dear Siva,
I agree with you. I am not talking about some fresher searching for new job my point is about those who are already in the job and now they want to go for further studies just to compensate themselves can now after putting a considerble amount of time in job they still needs to undergo MBA from reputed institution, if due to some reason they can not then if they are joining some less know institution like NIBM Chennai then it matters or not. Like in my case I have around 8 yrs of working experience but my PG Dip in HR is not from well known institution now I want to go for MBA (distance) through NIBM Chennai rather than doing it from Symbiosis or some other institution where its really expensive. Please give your valuable suggestions.
I am presently working as Executive HR and looking after the duties of Head of dept HR and Admin in a relatively large industry. But I do not have MBA degree with me.

Vijay

Dear Vijay
It matters. Reputation of Institution matters a lot. You name 100 well known senior executives in big companies in all professions. More than 60 percentage would be from reputred institutions.
In chennai you can try to get admission in the evening programme in madras School of Social Work which is good rather trhan doing in some lesser known institution.
It matters

Dear Siva,
Actually I am based at Uttarakhand state where we do not have any facilities of part time course. That is why i took admission in NIBM Chennai for one year Executive MBA course through distance mode charging Fee Rs. 7500/-.

Dear Vijay
I understand and appreciate the difficulties. These one year programmes are not recognised by many good companies. You can do to enhance your knowledge. But do not get disappointed if some big compan ies do not recognise these courses.
If you can manage XLRI or Symbiosis, you can do rather than doing this programme. Give it a try Ofcourse, no one give a gurantee that after doing a programme from XLRI or Sybiosis, you will be recognised immediately. But you will definitely be in a better footing

HI vijay_shankar, I understand ur concern, whatever may be the case whether u study n IIM or LOCAL COLLEGE what u need is determination. If u think u can then thats it nobody can stop u and u will win. There are so many people who have succeeded even without basic education but what they possess is just the determination and not to give up the task at any circumstances. Even i thought before 2years that UG is not enough to pursue a career growth so that i discontinued my job and joined MBA through counselling. Even i didn't know which college to choose eventhough was in first day of counselling. Now i feel that i have lost 2 years work experience but still have got great confidence that will surely achieve my goal as MANAGER, VP, CEO, PRESIDENT. DONT know whether i will do it but will try to travell through all those and have loads of confidence and updation of knowledge. Even in IIM, IIT everybody are placed but there is variation between each person. MY suggestion is U WILL surely be appreciated if u prove urself at entry level to get good opportunity is difficult but after some time what speaks is ur performance. SO just target the goals u will surely rock. IF u find my posting helpful i am happy, if you have any query please get back but dont worry. REGARDS, ajithaa

Dear GG,
Thanks for your valuable contribution. Its really like a shock sometimes that after putting so many years in a job still you are asked about your educational background. I think experience should also be given some sort of weightage institution can play a major role in case of freshers.
