In addition to what Sharmila Das mentioned, it also depends on the sector you are in. In general, official emails on holidays are okay in IT companies. However, in other sectors, it depends on other factors as Sharmila Das mentioned. This doesn't mean that they are an absolute "no."

I work in the private insurance sector. The email I intended to send was an official and regular one seeking confirmations from the recipient. On that particular day, a holiday was declared for that branch. I decided not to hold onto the message, especially with the high volume of emails coming in and out. I believe it's more efficient to complete tasks as they come up. Is there anything wrong with this approach?
My senior mentioned that it's not appropriate to send emails on holidays or when the person is on leave, which I disagree with. Please advise.

Like the saying goes: "The boss is always right" However, one reason why it's not advised to send official emails on holidays is this: Human psychology leads us to focus more on the 'present.' Usually, most people focus on the emails of TODAY before going through the previous day's emails—unless there was something important expected. This could be one reason for your boss's suggestion.
