How a Neighbor Dispute Might Affect My Software Career: Should I Tell My New Employer?

Verbal Dispute with Neighbor

I had a verbal dispute with one of my neighbors, a lady staying on the upper floor, due to a leakage issue from the top floor. Although I did not abuse or threaten her, I expressed my grievance very loudly. This incident was noticed by almost every neighbor in my society. Now, there is a high chance that she will file a criminal case or FIR against me, even though I have given a written apology.

Career Impact and Disclosure to New Employer

At the same time, I am also planning to change my company. I am not sure how this will impact my career. Do I need to disclose this to my new employer's HR before resigning from my current employer?

Thanks & Regards

Dear Dubey123, Indian police are often occupied with handling actual crimes such as theft, housebreaking, mugging, physical assault, or even murder. While what you have done might technically be considered a crime, it may not be perceived as such by the police. Even if they do get involved, they might try to resolve the dispute by seeking your apology. Alternatively, they might contact you with a different interest in mind. It is quite probable that an FIR may not be lodged. Therefore, relax; nothing is likely to happen to your career.

Nevertheless, if you take this incident as a lesson and work on controlling your irascibility, it would be beneficial!

Thanks,

Thank you very much, Dinesh, for your reply. That is also what my lawyer is saying. However, I am considering the worst-case scenario where she is able to file a criminal case against me. In that case, how will it impact my career, and should I inform this to my new employer?

Thanks and regards
