Privacy Breach at Work: How Should I Address My Manager Sharing My Performance Review?

neontrees
My manager has shared my annual performance review ratings and feedback comments with other team members in the same team. I have enough evidence to prove that he had shared that information with others.

Could you please let me know what action I should take to get justice in this case.

Try to find out what he has gained by committing such an act. It is human nature to try to forge connections by sharing confidential information, especially when it involves performance reviews. While this may not be done with the intention of harming the organization or its culture, it could be to gain favor in terms of output or motivation.

After considering this, what steps can you take regarding your boss? I recommend being cautious in your approach for future situations. While your boss may be at fault, the question now is what actions you can take. If necessary (and if you have access), consider reporting the situation to his superior to regain control of the circumstances.

Your scope for taking action depends on your company rules. Is there any rule within the company that he cannot share those documents? And if so, what is the remedy allowed in your organization. In a highly structured organization, you can complain to HR, grievance cell, or board. In a less structured organization, there is often no choice.

The other thing is how valuable are you? If you are really valuable, the company will take some action. Else, they may end up firing you for trying to take action.
